The Tony Awards Administration Committee assembled Jan. 20 to rule on eligibility issues for first half of the 2004-05 Broadway season. Committee members discussed the eligibility of shows that opened on Broadway since May 7, 2004.
The meeting resulted in the decision that all the season's solo shows — Dame Edna: Back with a Vengeance!, Laugh Whore, 700 Sundays, The Good Body and Whoopi, The 20th Anniversary Show — as well as the return engagement of Forever Tango will be considered in the "Special Theatrical Event" category.
Reckless and Twelve Angry Men will be considered by the nomination committee as revivals.
In addition, actors Mary Louise Parker (Reckless) and Philip Bosco and Boyd Gaines (Twelve Angry Men) will all be considered in the "Best Performance by a Leading Actor/Actress in a Play" categories.
Robert Prosky and Michael Cumpsty from Democracy and Ruben Santiago-Hudson and LisaGay Hamilton from Gem of the Ocean will be considered in the categories for "Best Performance by a Featured Actor/Actress in a Play."
All other decisions were consistent with the opening night credits.

And I'll be firmly cheering for Lisa Gay Hamilton. She was incredible.
Interesting that 700 Sundays won't be considered a play- I heard that is might be, so that Crystal would be considered for Best Actor.

Also, The Frogs is considered new by the committee, meaning Sondheim is eligible for a Best Score nomination!

I don't think the Frogs is anywhere near sondheim's best work...

Yeah, it is not his best.
But it is better than 99% of Scores out there.

What matters isn't whether it's his best work (I doubt anyone would assert that), but whether or not it's the best score this year.
ETA: Dammit, Priest. Beat me to it.

The Tony nominating committee always seems to make the right choices when it comes down to it, so no surprises here.
They've stopped many a producer's greedy petitions to move actors into categories they do not belong in in order to try to snag more Tonys!
I wonder if they will make Denis O'Hare eligible for Best Actor or Best Featured Actor. I think he belongs in the latter, but apparently his role has been beefed up, so he may get stuck in the former.
If the producers are smart they will put him in the far less cometitive featured category. Also, from the way things look, Ms. Applegate might be the first Broadway Charity to snag the Tony.

Posted: 1/20/05 at 7:41pmI mean with eligibility rules, not the actual nominations. THAT'S A DIFFERENT STORY!!! (Still mad about no Sondheim for A Funny THing Happened on the Way to the Forum).

Wow, the FROGS eligibility issue really throws a curve at the Best Score category.
What are we looking at there? DRS, for sure. PIAZZA, for sure. SPAMALOT, most likely.
Interesting that Guettel could be competing against his grandfather's old collaborator. It's nice to see the line continue. (I don't think Guettel stands a chance, however, as wonderful as his score for PIAZZA is. Tony voters notoriously hate that kind of thing.)

There are some things even I admit LW will in all liklihood get nominated for.
But I think I can pretty safely say that Best Score is not going to be one of them.

A second rate Sondheim score is usually better than anyone else's masterpiece.
As of late, I'm endorsing Mary-Louise for Best Actress. She was tremendously entertaining and moving in "Reckless".
Also: Carla G. and Jessica H. should both be nodded as Best Featured actress for "After the Fall"
