Has anyone every been to a Tony Awards dress rehearsal? I won a ticket in a silent auction last night and am not sure what to expect. Are camera allowed? Any information would help!
Thanks so much!

I love the dress rehearsal, so much fun!

They run through the telecast in pretty much real time (taking breaks where there will be commercial breaks, etc.), so you'll be there for approx 3.5 hours. About 90-95% of the actual presenters and performers are there for the rehearsal, a few of the 'bigger' names will probably have stand-ins in their spots. You'll get to see all of the performances that will be happening that night- watching the rehearsal of that opening number from last year's show was so interesting, to be able to watch parts of that come together. There are special video packages that are played during some of the commercial breaks that are not shown on the telecast, they're just for the crowd at Radio City to view, but you get to see them during the rehearsal commercial breaks.

Most people are dressed pretty casually- jeans, etc. I don't think cameras are 'allowed' per se, honestly can't remember, but people do bring and use their cameras. If your ticket is for the mezz seating just know that some people do line up early (7:30/8am ish) to snag front row seating, but with use of the video screens and everything there's not really a 'bad' mezz seat.

Sorry, that was a little bit of a ramble! Here's an old thread from the first year I went to a rehearsal, to give you more of an idea of what it's like...

How can you get a dress reh ticket?

I've gone a couple of times and they've been pretty strict with cameras.

I, too, have gone a couple of times and they have NOT been strict with cameras AT ALL. In fact, there were no ushers inside because it was general seating.

TONS of photos/video taken. The entire Mezz was glowing with cameras and phones.

When I sat downstairs in the Orch, however, no recording was permitted.

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

The DR is incredibly fun. Dress is "anything goes." In fact, although it's called a "dress rehearsal" the only ones in costume are the performers from the musicals, and even then not all of them. Last year, Liza did her opening performance in a tracksuit. And the presenters, the ones that actually showed up, were casual. James Gandolfini was in jeans. The audience wear anything and everything.

The easiest way to get DR tickets IMHO is to give a $250 or larger donation to the American Theatre Wing (although it's too late for this year's rehearsal).
