You do get to see some of the nominees/presenters, though not everyone went to the gala last year. Some might just skip it all together and just go to a particular show's party or some might just come for a little bit at the start. It lasted several hours with the crowds thinning out after the first 2 hours and being really heavy at the start (especially around the buffet line
). The swag, last year at least, was a Tonys bag, with various small items from those companies that sponsored the Tonys and a card to download particular songs on itunes. There is a nice buffet, dancing with a live band, and ample time to chat.
Just to reiterate what KChenowethfan has said: get to the gala ASAP as many TONY attendees, nominees, winners and presenters only make a short appearance at the gala before heading to their show's respective parties. Last year was an excellent year for mingling, (then again I was dressed and styled in a similar fashion as Anne Hathaway and was stopped repeatedly, it was very amusing!), and make sure to grab your TONY gift bag (last year wasn't as impressive as years prior unfortunately). Some of my favorite gala memories have been dining across from Angela Lansbury and excitedly chatting with Trent Kowalik, holding his TONY. If you're adventurous, try to find out where the show parties are. Last year HAIR had a rockin' party at Tavern on the Green and several shows had theirs at Hudson Terrace, which didn't end till 4 AM.
