Rockabye, of course when I find someone who shares my taste AND would marry me she has to be a woman, lol. You're still fabulous though
Fantasia is going to perform a short medley of The Apple Tree since it is no longer open... totally kidding, but who knows....

what songs are the noniees shows going to perfome the artce did not say what songs the shows are doing.
I think it's about time that the League lost its TV broadcast. Then maybe they could sit down in the cold light of day and address where they've been going wrong for years now. The snobbishness of excluding a show like Blonde, which will probably be running long after the nominees are just flats gathering dust in a Long Island warehouse is amazing.
They have nothing that the general public wants to see ("Jeeze Madge, the masturbating teenagers are sings but no sign of Reese") - except an Amreican Idol contestant who is being shoehorned in under dubious conditions.
I won't even bother tuning in.

If you want to keep seeing the Tony's on TV, you have to let them attempt their ratings stunts. It is no great secret that the Tony's ratings are not as high as CBS would like and if the trend keeps up, why continue showing the awards ceremony. So in short, welcome it with open arms or kiss the show goodbye.
Then kiss it goodbye and let someone else take a shot at turning out a show that highlights what is actually happening on Broadway, not what a bunch of effete snobs want to tell them is happening on Broadway. For years now, I have watched the Tonys and wondered what Broadway they are talking about.
In an era when Broadway is marketing itself better than practically any other branch of the entertainment industry (and this site is a prime example) the Tonys seem to be a dinosaur. The fact that they were running the first half on PBS indicated to me that this was narrowcasting at its worst.
Broadway used to SET the standards and ORIGINATE the songs America sang as well as introducing the new talent to the world. Broadway was the center of the entertainment biz. Now it's TV and film, but that doesn't mean that Broadway isn't a major element. The producers are marketing the street better than they have in decades. It's time that the Tonys caught up.
If I was running the show, you damn well bet I'd have a number from Legally Blonde. I'd probably lead off with it.
I just don't know what they are thinking. (And don't tell me it's because it's not nominated. Youtube is full of clips from Tony shows of the past featuring show that weren't nominated. Oh, right, but those shows were produced by showmen.
Not the type of folks who run the show today.
And Virgo, you said that Fantasia got some of the best Broadway debut reviews in history. While I don't disagree, I remember Reba McEntire getting some damn good reviews replacing Bernadette Peters in "Annie Get Your Gun". However, Reba, didn't perform on the Tonys. Why should an exception be allowed for Fantasia?"
Exactly. Reba didn't get a remade cast recording either. But clearly Fantasia is so much more special than anyone else in the history of Broadway! Have you seen her reviews!!
It's about mooching ratings out of American Idol fans. It has nothing to do with Fantasia's supposed talent or The Color Purple being deserving of the promotion.
I know skittles! They should just givve her the Tony, instead of that Ebersole person. I mean, Fantasia got the best reviews in history!!!!

ABOUT FANTASIA:
I frankly think it is better than Hugh Jackson and Aretha Franklin warbling "Somerwhere" as a celebration of Sondheim's 75th Birthday - not to mention he was only the lyricist of that song. A flimsy excuse.
Fantasia performing as a tribute to the Alliance seems a bit coincidental. Regional theatre recipients do not get performances on the telecast. The producers were pressured to add performances and couldn't have 'Blonde' or 'LoveMusik'. And Fantasia's performance in the show is getting quite a bit of publicity, even on a national level. Tony producers like anything with national familiarity or publicity.
ABOUT REBA:
Comparison's to Reba's appearance in 'Annie Get Your Gun' are both appropriate and not.
Reba's performance garnered great notices, like Fantasia's. Reba's were, in fact, better by comparison, though that is only marginally relevant - more on that in a minute.
Reba's reviews were so estatic there was a lot of talk of somehow giving Reba a Tony, though ultimately the committee decided that would establish a dangerously complicated precedent. Also, there was talk of somehow justifying a Reba performance on the Tony telecast. In the end, if you remember, she was given a dramatic entrance down center stage, gave a brief speech thanking the community for their acceptance, and presented an award.
(Side discussion: Reba's reviews being better is relevant when it comes to a possible new 'Purple' recording. Reba did not receive a recording - other than a two-track promo recording, which i have - because there were serious plans for a TV Movie of 'Gun' starring her. The cost of a recording wouldn't make sense if there was going to be a Soundtrack to the TV movie a couple years later. The TV Movie took too long to come together, she had to start her sitcom, with interest eventually waining enough to kill the project. How far it actually went in development, I'm not sure.)

Guess what peoples...
life isn't fair, and if you don't know that already you might as well learn it now.
2nd lesson:
Broadway isn't a party. It's BARELY an art form and is mostly a business and always has been. Who cares what decision they make for the Tony awards?! Be disappointed if you wanted to see a certain performance, but all this "fair" "unfair" business is ridiculous. How does someone DESERVE a Tony Performance? What about the regional production of something going on right now that is better than all the nominated shows? Should IT get to perform?
If it's so awful, then don't watch. I'm sure CBS will get over it. It's just how the cookie crumbled this time, and how it will crumble many times to come.
The way you people talk about it I'm half-way expecting to see Sally Struthers on TV urging me to send a penny a day into the "Legally Blonde Tony Performance" effort.
"I think it's about time that the League lost its TV broadcast."
Well said, allofmylife. The way things are going the loss of the national network platform for the Tonys is inevitable, and this is truly unfortunate. There is a wealth of talent and creative energy thriving on Broadway, but you'd never know this from watching the Tonys.
I just can't wait to see those 80 year old ladies come out and explain the history of the Antionette Perry awards once again. I hope Fantasia's "unfair" appearance won't cut into their time.
May as well have Simon Cowell host it then! More ratings!
"Reba did not receive a recording - other than a two-track promo recording, which i have - because there were serious plans for a TV Movie of 'Gun' starring her."
Actually the main reason Reba's AGYG didn't get a recording was because Bernadette's contract specifically stated her's was the only full cast recording to come out of the production.
I think the League and the Wing should end their relationship with CBS instead of dumbing down the show with hack celebrity presenters and talentless recording artists. Put it on PBS and put it in a normal sized theatre I say!
