This has guessed previously, but it looks for sure like there will be no Legally Blonde or LoveMusik performing at this years Tonys =(

"Agreed. If Lovemusik and Blond can't perform, neither should Fantasia."
Amen. Why should she take time out of the other shows performances?

"Agreed. If Lovemusik and Blond can't perform, neither should Fantasia."
Did anyone in Lovemusik or Blond, earn some of the best debut reviews in Broadway history? If the answer is no, then you can't compare the two to Fantasia.
and where in the rule book does it say "If lovemusik and Blond can't perform, neither should fantasia"? Point that out, then maybe I'd agree with you.

No, the show closed.
As excited as I am to see Fantasia, it just isn't right. She isn't even in a show that opened this season.

(Fantasia got)"some of the best reviews in Broadway history..."
Yeah she did get some great reviews but thats a stretch if I've ever seen one.
This does seem a little sketchy after the whole "Blonde and Musik performing would take away performance time from our shows" debate.
But I'm sure they're allowing it because she'll be perming out of character I'm assuming.

Oh well, just turn the tv off when she comes on, then it'll be like she never performed. That's my advice to everyone who feels "it just isn't right". Boycott the tony's then.

Plus, Fantasia isn' doing a medley of songs from THE COLOR PURPLE. She's just performing as the recording artist she is, not the 'actress'. Same way Aretha Franklin and Mary J. Blige performed in the past. Nothing more; nothing less.
She'll probably perform a medley of 'black' performer songs from Broadway's past, like "Summertime" from PORGY & BESS, etc.

Posted: 5/29/07 at 5:39pmI'll admit, when she did Summertime when she was on American Idol, it was absolutely fabulous. I think they are having her to get better ratings.

Posted: 5/29/07 at 5:39pmWhile Fantasia may not be performing songs from TCP, it seems highly probable that when she is introduced it will be mentioned that she is currently performing in the show, which is essentially advertising for TCP.

Re: Fantasia performing "black" performer songs.
Exactly, whether Fantasia is performing songs from the show or not doesn't really matter, the advertising will still be there.
If they're gonna do that, fine, then have Donna Murphy and Michael Cerveris perform a series of German songs that are not necessarily written by Weill, or Laura Bell Bundy sing a medley of "white" performer songs from Broadway in the past.
This is absurd.

We're all assuming she's performing out of character, but I'll be the first to put money down that she'll wind up doing "I'm Here" from the show (though maybe not in costume.)

Uhh, because the ceremony depends on a network for all of us to watch it on TV? A network that I'm sure already has doubts about airing a three hour long theatre-award show.
So, do you think that someone would watch it because the American Idol star might be performing, or because they want to see a musical number from an obscure musical they have no clue even existed and would drop the ratings at the speed of light?

I'd bet that as well, somethingwicked.
And Virgo, you said that Fantasia got some of the best Broadway debut reviews in history. While I don't disagree, I remember Reba McEntire getting some damn good reviews replacing Bernadette Peters in "Annie Get Your Gun". However, Reba, didn't perform on the Tonys. Why should an exception be allowed for Fantasia?

What takes away from other show's performing times is an unending stream of boring speeches and awards few people care about. The Tony Broadcast is Broadway's best chance to sell itself to the American public, and it makes me want to throw up hearing how the New York theater community has once again shot itself in the foot.
I hope Fantasia does a long Color Purple medley wearing a purple dress in front of a big Color Purple logo. Why is everyone acting like it's a crime to promote theater?

Because they're not promoting theater, if they were, they would allow LOVEMUSIK and LEGALLY BLONDE to perform.
Why are people kidding themselves about the ratings this year? The telecast will be competing against THE SOPRANOS series finale so do you seriously think people will see Fantasia is going to be on and tune in instead of watching the other options? If you're gonna have a telecast that will inevitably be skipped by most people, why not try to truly satisfy the people who ARE going to be watching? Beats me.

No, you're right, the network would find itself defeated for The Sopranos, and realize no one would watch Fantasia perform, and give the spot to LoveMusik- :S
It is TV, not theatre - it is about the best possible rating they can get-Sopranos or not, and that is assuming people won't watch between commercial breaks.
Not so long ago, the Tony telecast was close to not happening altogether - well, wonder why, unless you have a huge Hollywood or recording star on it, it would eventually never happen.

Posted: 5/29/07 at 10:23pmI heard from someone in the Theatre Wing that Fantasia is performing as part of the Alliance Theatre's Tony Award win of the Regional Theatre Tony. The Color Purple had its world premiere at the Alliance in 2005. This seems totally reasonable to showcase The Color Purple as a stellar example and recognition of the Alliance Theatre's role in the development of new work for Broadway. The Alliance also presented developmental productions of Aida and Sister Act. Fantasia's performance is not connected with the numbers being performed for other shows from the Best Musical and Best Revival categories.
