I know that some musicals perform, but I was wondering if scenes from plays are also performed during the show?
I don't think that they perform scenes from plays. I am pretty sure it is only musicals.
Last year they showed very brief video clips.
Do plays get to do anything?
I don't really think it's fair that all the musical people get to perform, and the play people don't.

I remember watching the Tonys on TV a few years back, and I saw a scene from 'Tale of the Allergist's Wife'... but that could have just been a clip... my memory is failing me.

They've done scenes from plays in the past and it really just doesn't work -- you can do a song/production number from most musicals out of context an it's totally fine, but a two minute scene from a play, in most cases is just really odd. Last year, they did these well-edited and compiled montages of scenes from each of the plays (sort of like movie trailers), with voice over narration giving a nice little synopsis of the plot and the play's themes that worked very well. While the goal of the Tonys is a celebration of LIVE theatre, these clip packages worked better for the plays than any live presentation they've ever been able to come up with before, so I hope they repeat them again this year.
