Posted: 9/16/06 at 12:04pmHow could only Harvey F. and Jonathan P. get close to nominated? Why not John O' Hurley, or Eden Espinosa, or Ashley Brown???????!???? Also, Donny Osmond and Usher should have been nominated this current season if they still had that award around!

First, Harvey was in the season prior to the new award.
Second, a nominee had to have been contracted for at least six months and not been a part of the original cast. (Does Eden count, since she was the original standby? Usher and Mr. O'Hurley do not qualify for the 6 months rule, I believe.)
Third, a nominee had to have been in a role that the originator was nominated for a Tony for. (Donny Osmond's role was not up for a Tony Award.)
Finally, last year season decided not to do the award. Then after the Tonys they canceled the idea all together.

Posted: 9/16/06 at 12:31pmABF123 - First off, when the category was announced they said there wouldn't be nominees. Second, Donny doesn't start until Tuesday. And I'm not sure I would call Usher's performance "Tony worthy"

Maybe Ashley Brown and so on didn't get nominated because they weren't on par with Mr. Firestein and Mr. Pryce.
And maybe, AshleyBrownFan, you should think about using last names. This isn't first grade.

Posted: 9/16/06 at 3:32pmNo one was nominated...ever. They were just going to announce the winner. Jonathan Pryce and Harvey Fierstein were just a speculation, nothing more (although I do remember that when the award was cancelled, someone admitted Pryce should have won).

Ashley girlfriend, you are so blatantly asking for it.
Sad.

Posted: 11/22/06 at 4:30pmThis is going to sound SOO dumb, but how can they not understand the policies of a category they themselves created?

Ok think about it.
The nominating commmittee has to decide which new shows are eligible and for what category (Every year this is different, What's a revival? Special Theatrical event? etc...) The same thing happens with the roles and actors (what is lead vs. what is featured etc...)
Then they see all the shows.
Then they nominate
Then The voters need to see all the shows that are nominted for the regular tony's that year.
Then they vote
That is for just the new shows.
The replacement category was an ill-conceived idea from the start.
The producers were asked to submit the names of eligible recipients based on the guidelines that have already been stated in this thread. Of course, since the Tony award is a great marketing tool, they nominated everyone. So this means that the whole process that I just described had to happen all over again.
Think about all the shows that are running on B'way right now. the voters would be seeing things every night trying to figure out who the heck to vote for.
The voters get comp seats to the shows which adds a logistical nightmare for the box office and general managers to deal with.
It sounds like a great idea but in practice it doesn't work.
Kinda like communism!

My opinion on this award, as stated in a previous thread.
Best Replacement-
This award was a flop in its trial year, and may be, as the Tony committee felt, too complicated to work. However, the main drive for this award came out of the stellar performance of Reba McEntire in the revival of “Annie Get Your Gun,” and the desire to have been able to reward her for her performance. But what should have been realized, though, is that they were the Tony committee, they could have awarded her a Special Tony Award. I think instead of trying to re-implement a flawed award, they should simply be more prepared to award replacements who create sufficient buzz and a good performance with Special Tonys.

Posted: 11/22/06 at 9:52pmthey never even gave the award a real try. I hate that they just threwit out when there were so many actors who deserved it.
