Why does the award for best play go to the playwright instead of the producers like the best muscial does?
Thanks
my only guess would be that there are **SSOOOO** many more contributors to the end product in the making of a musical.

I thought that also but aren't there a lot of people for plays as well?

Actually, the producer of the Best Play gets a statuette too, but the award is primarily for the writing of a new play.
I think it also has to due with the fact that there are awards for the best book and score of a musical but there isn't a best script award for plays. At the oscars, writers can be nominated for screenplays and that is why producers win the best film awards.
But this is just my speculation...

I'm pretty sure you're right, Roddick.
