Nicely said FOA..
I very much enjoyed TDC. It was cute, clever, funny and had 2 great performances (Danny and Sutton). I was moved on many levels by JB. The music was thrilling and superbly performed. The cast seemed to be giving 100%. The story sucked me in and held me tightly until after the curtain call. It's a musical I won't soon forget. Other than "Show Off" (which I barely remember), not one note of TDC sticks in my head one month later. Again, I really enjoyed it and wish it much success, but I felt that JB was more evolved on many levels.

Y'know, the big problem is, The Drowsy Chaperone, while I adore it, is no Suth Pacific. It's no Les Miz, it's not City of Angels, or Sunset Blvd., it's not evenDamn Yankees or My Fair Lady or Company or Sweeney Todd.

I guess what bothers me is that Jersey Boys isn't either. I saw both shows. I loved DC. I liked JB. Hell, my parents loved their music.

I guess that's my problem. Anyone who saw almost any of the 57 musicals that have won Best Musical never had to say, "my parents liked that music when they first heard it."

Call me a snob, but I just truly believe the music should be written for the show in order to win "Best Musical." And I keep harping on this because someone has to.

That's, with one or maybe two exceptions, a pretty illustrious group of shows that have preceeded this year's award-winner. I guess maybe I'm leaning toward a new rule that would preclude best musicals with no Broadway music in them....

"I think the winner will be the surprise of the night a la "Crash" at the Academy Awards."

Sorry to threadjack a little bit but, Crash winning wasnt a surprise at all. It was far superior to anything else this year and was going to win form the get go.

As for the tonys I hope TDC takes it but I could see it like last year where TDC wins score and Book and a bunch of other awards and the Jersey Boys could take Best musical. Such as it was with Piazza (which im not gonna get started on cuz id be run off the board, and spamalot)

I completly understand what you folks are saying about Jersey Boys being more marketable than TDC if we're talking about future tours, but, as much as I hate to say it, what about The Color Purple? I mean, what's more marketable than Oprah Winfrey? Almost right after the nominees were announce, I began to worry that TCP would win simply because Oprah's name is attatched to it and both TCD and JB would go the way of Piazza last year.

*attempts to shove the worms back into the can*

Anyway, I'm just preparing for a terrible upset by my least favorite show, which, sadly, has a history of happening in the Best Musical catagory.

I still beg to differ.

What's more marketable than Oprah Winfrey? A lot of things.

The music of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons is nationally recognized and loved by those of varied ages, sexes and backgrounds. This group managed to be a world-wide sensation even through the Beatle years.

Oprah? Yes, her name is nationally recognized, but mostly by the housewives who stay home to watch her show. There's NO WAY you're going to get as many teenagers and older men to THE COLOR PURPLE as you would with JERSEY BOYS. JERSEY BOYS appeals to everyone while THE COLOR PURPLE has a limited national audience. Though I'm sure it will have a successful tour...it's almost a guarantee JERSEY BOYS will have a far more successful one.

Thank you for the words of comfort, FOAnatic. I hope you're right. I'd much rather see Jersy Boys beat out Drowsy than The Color Purple.

Is there a host yet for the Tonys? No one has been announced.

Theatreboy....."Crash" winning was quite the surprise. The buzz on its possible win didn't get going until about a month before the awards. Everyone was saying it after it won.

Theaterboy, I work out here in Los Angeles and believe me, the word on the street and in every studio after Crash won was "How did that piece of poo-poo slip in there?" Yes, many, if not most people expected the gay shepherd film to win" (they weren't cowboys) but every executive I have spoken to has been shocked at Crash's win. Talk about a mediocre piece of work. Nothing in that film moved me. Absolutely nothing. I've seen those "LA is hell-on-earth" films for two decades now (LA Story, Shortcuts, Two Days in the Valley, Boogie Nights). Hell, Crash doesn't deserve to hold the lube of Boogie Nights. It just baffled us all.
