Tonya
re: Tonya#25
Posted: 6/6/04 at 11:20pmShe did sound a little overwhelmed tonight. I thought the song was AMAZING though. Beautiful writing. I had never heard the song. As for singing off key... I've noticed in years past people singing off key. Do you think it has to do with monitors and hearing the orchestra? I remember James Barbour and Marla S. singing from Jane Eyre and singing a little flat. Still, I think that Tonya sang the hell out of the song. I love that woman.

I found myself cringing at the amount of times her voice was cracking. I didn't enjoy her singing in her show but to sing that poorly live at an Awards event is quite an embarrassment. The people around me were
astonished that she even bothered going on.

Posted: 6/7/04 at 12:44amIt wasn't her best. I cringed during every gasp of Idina's too. But I guess you have to gasp your air in to scream that way. Don't get me wrong, j'adore her.

Loved the song. Definitely buying the OBCR when it's released. However, her hoarseness, be it characterization or not, was very distracting. The song was dramatically perfect, but vocally, hmm...
The performances this year were better than last year's. Last year's only memorable number was Peters' rendition of "Rose's Turn."

Posted: 6/7/04 at 1:17amI don't think "Lot's Wife" served as a good promo for the show, it's great in context tho. I think anybody who saw Rose's Turn last year with no knowledge of Gypsy (I know, who in the world is that, but bear with me) would really have "got it" either.

Posted: 6/7/04 at 1:19amMy sister had no idea about Gypsy, but she was blown away by Peters' "Rose's Turn" last year. It's all there in the lyrics- she's a stage mother who was left behind by her kids, and this is her breakdown over that.
re: Tonya#33
Posted: 6/7/04 at 1:21amI stand corrected. Unless your sister is some sort of super-genius from an advanced race of space aliens with an intricate knowledge of Broadway history?
re: Tonya#34
Posted: 6/7/04 at 1:24amI sometimes wonder what planet she's from, but no, nothing as exotic as that. I'm the musical freak in the family- though doing Company in high school this year has given her a nice appreciation of Sondheim.
re: Tonya#35
Posted: 6/7/04 at 1:25amI think its just the way she sings/character choice. I received the Tony Voter CD of Caroline and the recording of Lot's Wife that will be released on CD was on it, and she cracks a bit on the longer notes.

Yeah, when I saw it in April, her voice was devine. She blew the roof off of the Eugene O'Neill. Lot's Wife sent chills up and down my spine over and over again. I think that song out of context is hard to grasp, as well. Regardless of the fact she was hoarse and not in good voice, the song out of context loses some impact. The show really builds up to that point... it's the climax of the show. It was one of the most surreal experiences I've ever had at the theatre. I was really moved by that show. I hate that it didn't do well... I hope we don't see it's final days in the near future because of it.
I can understand why she's having voice problems... giving that song your all 8 times a week is BOUND to blow it out... I don't care who you are. It's just not physically possible to not wear out your voice doing that. It's an emotionally and physically draining song.
She still acted the hell out of it this evening. I need to go see that show again...
