Gypsy, perhaps the greatest musical ever, lost Best Musical to 2 shows ( a tie) Fiorello and Sound Of Music
Both classic shows but beating Gypsy? Come on guys

Just a reflection of the times and, of course, voters had no idea of what the next 50 years would bring. Gypsy trumps those other two a hundredfold.
Both very enjoyable and one more famous than the other but.....
Saw Gypsy with Tyne , Angela, Bernadette and Patti.
Yes but the tony's have never really been about what is the better musical. People vote for what they like more, not necessarily what is better.

But what objective criteria defines what a " better" musical is ? I think whatever a voter likes the most is the " best" for them. Other people may disagree with them but that doesn't make it the wrong choice.

Sort of like the critics who praise shows they like not necessarily better than those they dislike. It is all subjective
I would love to see some voters added who are just plain ordinary theater goers & not "Trained professionals" .May get some variety into the proceedings.

How?
How is giving the award to the show that gets the most votes "getting it wrong"? That sounds exactly right to me.
People really get stupid about the Tonys. Suddenly, everyone becomes an expert in the industry and a psychic into the minds of the voters. No award is given without some sinister conspiracy behind it. Apostrophe's get abused and now, the Tonys apparently are supposed to predict the opinion and popularity of any given musical 50 years in advance. If Antoinette knew her name would carry such ludicrous responsibilities, she probably would have never founded the American Theatre Wing.

You may have a nuanced point but I'm not really following.
Don't people generally "like" more what they find to be "better?"

The way some people around here post you would think you should always vote for the "important" show over the show that is "just entertaining." Unless, of course, they don't like the important show. In that case it only wins because it's important and we are witnessing the death of Broadway and entertainment.

In general, I think it's possible to admire a show and find it technically the best written or performed or whatever, but still have find a lesser show more enjoyable. In that case, the person votes for whatever they liked, even if they recognize another show has more skill.
