Exactly, Phillypinto. You HOPE both of them get nominated. You have every right to your opinion, and I think you are right to hope that, since Davie and Padgett are both great in Side Show. I'm just saying that the Tony committee doesn't (or at least shouldn't -- maybe they sometimes do) base their eligibility rulings on whether or not 2 actresses are talented enough that the individuality of their performances should be ignored just so they can both get nominated. THAT'S not how that works.
Yes, it happened before. And the producers of the original production probably had similar reasoning to you, Phillypinto: they wanted both of them to be nominated because they probably didn't think both of them would be nominated if they were individual. However, even if that was clearly their motive, that's probably not what they told the Tony Committee when trying to convince them. I seriously doubt the Tony Committee nominated them jointly just because the producers told them "we would like them both to be nominated, so please lump them together." Otherwise every show with 2 leading actors or actresses would do that.
They lumped them together because the producers convinced them that their performances were intertwined enough that they should be nominated together. You agree with that decision. I don't. That's fine, but whatever the case, they didn't make their decision just because "both of them are worthy of being nominated"
BTW, yeah I just threw together a list of actresses opening in high-profile shows in the Spring. You're right, many of the ones I listed are not guaranteed to be nominated. My point was that there are is a lot of competition against the Side Show girls, and the fact that the show flopped will not help their case.

I just think its really hard to think of them separately.
Actually, if this were true, I think it would be a good argument for neither of them getting a nomination at all. :) However, I don't think it's true. The actresses did a terrific job making sure we knew they were two very different people, so it's very easy for me to think of them separately.

Posted: 1/17/15 at 9:03amI think it is such a shame that Rachel Tucker is eligible for Leading Actress. She is so talented and I think supporting would be perfect for this role, lets be honest there is only one leading role in The Last Ship. I think if Meg was a supporting role then she might have a chance of nomination.

Posted: 1/17/15 at 9:56amI think it is appropriate that they are nominated separately. There are plenty of shows where two leads give wonderful performances, but are not nominated together. If the characters were twin sisters, but not conjoined twin sisters, would this conversation even be happening? They are not playing the same character, and I think it would be an insult to the actresses (and the Hilton Sisters) to nominate them together. I am a fan of both Alice Ripley and Emily Skinner, but I don't think it was the right decision to nominate them together.

Remember: Just because the original was considered one way doesn't mean the revival will be. It's all up to the producers. Example: Dorothy Loundon won Leading as Hannigan in the original ANNIE, but Katie Finneran was deemed eligible as Supporting.
I think the Tonys are right to consider them as individuals instead of together.
