I haven't seen the show without Harvey. (I have seen the OBC and the movie only) So my question is, have you ever seen anyone in the role of Arnold besides Harvey? I know that this is performed in regional theatres and other things like that but were they good?
Thanks!

I saw the national tour with Charles Repole (I think) back around 1983 and he was very good as I recall and quite ably handled the comedic and well as the more dramatic aspects of the character.
Wasn't there recent talk of John Cameron Mitchell doing a revival?

Yes, I remember there was discussion of him doing a revival, but nothing seems to have come of it. Perhaps he's been to busy with his film "Shortbus" to focus on it.

I hope they come out with a revival soon! They're doing it here in Brooklyn. The Gallery Players where Harvey got his start! So i'm sure he's going to see it as am I! (Because I doubt I could get a part in the show)
I actually saw the show twice without Harvey. Once on Broadway at a matinee (which Harvey wasn't doing at the time) and once when the tour came to Los Angeles.
One performance I saw Jonathan Hadary (B-way). And in LA I can't remember off the top of my head, but he was quite good.
I have to say, that I throughly enjoyed both performances. I would have loved to see Harvey, but it just wasn't in the cards.
I will say that I LOVED Estelle Getty and was lucky enough to see it with her both times.

Awesome! She shpuld've done the movie! (Though Anne was perfect!)
I heard Jonathan replaced him! But I've only seen John in All Shook Up, Gypsy Revival, and Assassins OOBC. I can kinda picture him in the role!
If you can get a copy of Otis L. Guernsey's BROADWAY SONG AND STORY, there is an in depth discussion with Firestein, Getty and producers of the show. They discuss how the show came about, performing it on Broadway and replaceing Harvey. All fascinating.
Anthony Sher opened it in London and was then followed by Harvery. It was a remarkable performance from Sher who played Arnold a little more 'needy' as I recall and it was very much an actor's performance - one of those that knows it will get the actor noticed by a wider audience. He also made the mke-up in the first play 'prettier'/more stylish for want of a better word.

Oh goody, another brand new crackpot on the boards .....
or is what keeps Broadway going. Shows like that are why we have theater
I saw Harvey in the role several times and Jonathan Hadary in it once. I've seen Mr. Hadary in this, As Is, Gypsy, Angels in America (Roy Cohn on tour) and The Little Foxes (Oscar in Washington). He never ceases to amaze me, he is truly one of Broadways underated performers.
As for Right Americas comment , he is a disgusting idiot.
Plays like this are what make Broadway great.

Don't get upset and take the bait. It's just another pathetic sock puppet who joined today and will be gone soon who's crying out desperately for attention by saying outrageous things hoping to get a response.
Ignore it.
I'm trying to understand what RightAmerica means, but I can't. Does he mean shows that have gay characters, or gay themes dim the lustre (who uses that word?) of Broadway?
Honey, either way, theatre, for me, has always been a refuge (for the homosexuals).
Go to Hell.

That was funny.
