Yeah but she is far from a Velma. Roxie seems to be a pretty good match for her.
For Velma she needs exceptional dancing and singing skills.
No she doesn't, ljay. I saw someone who wasn't a "name" in the role of Velma last fall and she wasn't such a triple threat.
Can't even remember her name now - tall blonde. Legs for days.
Tori Spelling would actually be able to capture Roxie's desperation quite well, IMO. I doubt she can dance, but who knows. I still think it would be a fascinating performance.
Rent Trick. She taps and her singing ain't half bad.

That would be Luba Mason. Sad to see you don't remember her name. She is quite a seasoned Broadway talent. She is an incredible vocalist, which made up for any disadvantages she had with dancing.
The day Tori can sing like Luba Mason, someone give me a call. Velma is rarely, rarely, rarely if ever stunt casted. It requires way too much talent. Usually Velmas are both amazing singers and dancers. And some are stronger in the singing (Luba) and some are stronger in the dancing (Terra MacLeod.) Tori either has to have an amazing voice to make up for her lack of dance skills, are she has to be an amazing dancer to make up for her lack of singing skills. You will never find a Velma that lacks in both. Most usually shine in both.
She's rumored to be Roxie, not Velma, so I don't know why we're having this discussion.
"She is an incredible vocalist, which made up for any disadvantages she had with dancing."
I disagree. She's not an "incredible" vocalist, but a serviceable one, and how can singing make up for NOT dancing in that role?

If she can indeed dance, I think she would be a Fabulous B-list replacement for Chicago. She has a keen sense of self depricating humor and definitely possesses that innate desperation of Roxie. If it's indeed true I thinks it's intrigiung casting.
Rath! I'm shocked at you. I can't believe you're basing Luba's vocals soley on Chicago. She has an unbelievable voice. I think you should check out her solo album "Collage." I'd NEVER heard anyone deny that she's an incredible vocalist. Wow.
And many hardcore Chicago fanatics agreed, that her fabulous singing and acting made up for some problems she had with dancing (like high kicks) otherwise she was a fine dancer.
I have heard her sing live - songs off that CD. I stand by my assessment.
As for the dancing, it's not what Velma should be.
I don't understand why so many people feel that this show needs to close. This show has so many perfect elements to it, the score, and the choreography. It isn't very often that you can find such coreography today on Broadway, but this show delivers. I think this show deserves to be running as long as it is.
Aside from that, I can see Tori as Roxie. Obviously its not perfect casting, but I think it might work.
God what a thought. She has absolutely no talent and is only where she is, where ever that is, because she is Aaron Spelling's daughter.
Well said, Broadwaylady... But at least it's not Brittany Spears they are talking about or to.

I think being his daughter, while it helped her get into the business, has caused her more harm than good. People expect her to be untalented, and don't pay attention to the fact that in fact, she's not at all.
Oh dear God.

Tori was fantastic in Trick and is in So NoTorious. And even if she isn't the best singer or dancer--that actually works for the character of Roxie, who is a hack. Besides the role isn't written for a great singer. It was written for the sensational Gwen Verdon who had a one octave range but could sell ANYthing.

"You know, I never properly appreciated the term "hell to the no," until I read the title of this thread."
You earned this "LOL" - I litterally did laugh at loud.
And man, this makes me wish that the Britney Spears stunt casting had gone through. Britney in Sweet Charity? Brillant.
And that wasn't her singing on Saved By the Bell...the episode with the Glee Club...was it?
Oh for God's sake - that was SUPPOSED to be bad singing.
Rent Trick so that you all know what you're talking about.

Why don't people give her a chance to see if she can pull it off? I am not a fan of hers, but I have seen people that I was not fond of previously really bat one out of the park on-stage. There is nothing to say she may not fall in that category.
I am a fan of hers and I am not opposed to seeing her try however I don't think Roxie Hart and have Tori pop into mind. I'm not saying that she won't be fab but I've seen some amazing Roxies in my time and I just don't see how she can compare.
Last fall I believe it was Luba Mason as Velma. She is a great singer / dancer.
It's kind of inspired casting if you ask me. I mean the character of Roxie Hart is a born LOSER.
