I can understand why people hate when users start this kind of thread, but I need your opinions. I'm fifteen-years-old and I barely get to see any Broadway shows. For Christmas, my mom said I could get tickets to any show I wanted. Narrowing it down to two shows was the easy part - "Gypsy" and "Sunday in the Park With George".
The thing is, I really can't pick which one to see. Whichever one I pick, most likely I will not get to see the other and I'm a paranoid person so I'm anxious about this. My parents taking me to see a Broadway show is a big deal, and Broadway seriously means so much to me that every chance I get is so huge.
I'm kind of swaying towards one show already but I need your opinions. "Sunday" is one of my favorite shows, if not my very favorite. Although I haven't seen it (obviously) I've been extremely excited about it since it was announced there was going to be a revival. On the other hand, I know how amazing "Gypsy" is although I haven't really gotten into it, but I LOVE Patti LuPone and DO NOT want to miss the opportunity to see her in this production. So that's my dilemma. If you were in my shoes, which show would you pick?
Also, I know "Sunday" is only playing until April (right?) so I was thinking I could see that, and then see "Gypsy" later in the year, but the question is, how long do you think it will stay open? Thanks in advance for your replies!

If I were you since I am anticipating to see both shows... and I would probably see both
(I already have a ticket on Sunday for Feb.)
I will just toss a coin ! HARD CALL ! but you know what.. I have a feeling that Sunday in the Park with George will probbably win the TONYS for Best Revival !

Posted: 1/4/08 at 8:41pmI think both shows will be wonderful, you can't go wrong! I would personally go with "Gypsy", but if you're so passionate about "Sun" by all means go! I think "Gypsy" will have a nice run.

Posted: 1/4/08 at 8:43pmThis is a hard call. SUNDAY is opening earlier, and is a limited run. Plus, it's not a show that is revived very often. And while LuPone was fantastic in GYPSY, if you're not that into GYPSY, go with the show you love more. Do you have the London OBCR for SUNDAY? Do you like it? If you do, go with SUNDAY.

^^^ speaking of the SUNDAY London Cast Recording... Do you guys think that they would NOT record the Broadway Revival anymore since they have the two principal actors.. just wonderin'?

Yeah, that's what I'm kind of freaking out about. I feel like if I don't see it now, then I'll never get to see it. Which may be a little dramatic but you never know.

Jay,
I'm doubtful if Sunday will get its own recording. The trend seems to be that shows that have been successful in London which are transported with the same (or almost the same) cast are not re-recorded. For example, Phantom, the most popular of all the Brit musicals, never had a "Broadway" recording -- thereby denying a "legitimate" permanent record of Judy Kaye's performance. These have already been on the market and unless Sunday becomes another success of the Cabaret ilk and runs for years and years (unlikely, IMO), its chances of having its own recording are diminished. But you never know and that's my opinion only.

Wow. That is a hard choice. I had the chance to see the original production of "Sunday" but didn't. It has become one of my favorites. I went as far as to make sure I was in NYC so I could go to MoMa to see the sketch exhibit that had the early sketches from the painting. And I am going to see the original. So I am kinda into "Sunday.."!!
On the other hand, I have just become a Patti Lupone fan since "Sweeney" and would see her in anything probably. I have never seen Gypsy onstage, so Lupone and this show together should be a blast. I am not a huge fan of the music, but I would see it because I know I should.
But I think if I had to make a choice, it would have to be "Sunday". I just don't think I would pass it up. The decision, for me, would be that I would figure there will be another revival of Gypsy in about 5 or 10 years with a fabulous actress doing it and I could see it then. I would just have to not be upset at that time when people say "Well I saw Patti do it"!
I am hoping to see both. But I wish you luck with your decision. And enjoy whichever one you see!

This particular production of SUNDAY is brilliant -- in my opinion even better than the classic original production. This GYPSY is terrific too, but I would personally choose SUNDAY over it, given that you'll very likely get to see another first rate production of GYPSY sometime in the next decade or so. GYPSY continues to be one of the most consistently revived shows in the musical theatre canon (the LuPone version will be the 5th time the show has been on Broadway in the past 50 years, plus it's constantly done regionally by professional companies every single year). SUNDAY is much more of a rarity -- this is its first revival -- and it very well may not pop up again on Broadway for another 20 years after this production closes.

I saw the original Sunday cast on VHS tape... so you think that this SUNDAY is better than that? hmmmm.. interesting !!! I am dying to see it now, though I enjoyed the recording a lot...
One question: why they retain their british accent in the London recording? ( i know that their brits) but should have they removed that? they are supposed to be in France or .. it does not really matter?

Wow, that describes exactly what I'm thinking! I guess now I'm sort of swaying towards "Sunday". Afterall, I love it so much and yeah, I guess it probably won't be around again for a long time. Then again, I'd love to see Patti.
But thanks for your replies!

Margo, you beat me to the Gypsy thing! I was taking too much time to post!
And EveRy...I was reading your mind!!!
#17re: Tough Show Decision... :(
Posted: 1/4/08 at 9:18pmI would go with Sunday since it opens earlier and will close sooner than Gypsy. This way you would have a better chance of seeing both.

I agree with Margo, I'd go for SITPWG! Especially since you love that show! Patti was amazing in Gypsy, but I SITPWG will be one of those sort of "once in a lifetime theatre going experiences!" Plus you can find clips of Patti singing gypsy on that site.
It is a very tough decision though! I'm going to try and see both, but I wish you luck! Hopefully you will eventually get the chance to see both... If you really want to see both perhaps you could possibly arrange something with your mother so you pay for one set of tickets and she can give the other as the gift. You could maybe stay for two shows on one day if you can't stay in the city for along while... however I would suggest the lighter show for the later performance and possibly drinking/consuming some caffeine so you're wide awake and don't miss anything, because if you are not used to the city it can be very tiring!

Since "Sunday" is a limited run, maybe ask your parents later in the year if you can see "Gypsy" (if LuPone is still in it) as a present for next Christmas.

Horton -
I think teens that are really into theatre like to see shows with more substance than those... unfortunately in today's world most teens are generic and simply follow trends. I find that many "teens" don't think for themselves and let others form their opinions for them.
