Hey All,
I was wondering what some opinions of Tovah in the role of Berthe now tht she has had about a month (and change) to settle into the role. I might consider a return visit in the future.

Well I don't know what the majority consensus is but having seen her in August when she was filling in, I thought she was just terrific!

Posted: 10/19/13 at 12:03pmI saw her last night, I thought she was great, but I still preferred Andrea Martin's portrayal of Berthe. Last night was my first time seeing her, I didn't see her in August.

Posted: 10/19/13 at 5:40pmShe was wonderful, although I did like Andrea Martin's performance better. The cast didn't seem to feed off of Tovah's energy. They looked dead ONLY during Berthe's scene when I saw it.

Wonder why Martin even got involved in view of her early departure
Saw Tovah in her one woman show on Golda Meir and many years earlier saw her in Sarava

Posted: 10/19/13 at 8:37pmMartin was involved from a year ago until September. That's longer than everyone's participation in such limited run productions as Lucky Guy and Betrayal. And the same as everyone in what will probably be the run of Glass Menagerie. Martin didn't extend her contract when she got another job. Nothing to be ashamed or regretful about.

I saw Andrea Martin in "Pippin" on a trip to New York last spring. I just saw it again this week with Tovah. They were both terrific. But they are two different types of people and bring two different personalities to the role. I think it depends on whom you have an affinity for. I found Andrea Martin more comical and Tovah Feldshuh brought more of a "strong Jewish grandmother who still looks damn good" take to the role. And the audience loved her.
BTW, Ms. Martin looked damn good too.

Posted: 10/22/13 at 9:30amI saw her a few weeks ago and she was fine. Had she been in the original cast I would not have expected a Tony win. Rachel Bay Jones gave far more of a stand out performance.

Posted: 10/22/13 at 10:16amI agree with TheatreGeek6. However, she was delightful and played the role really, really well. She was well cast, and made the part her own.

Posted: 10/22/13 at 12:10pmI saw her in the role two weekends ago - - although she did a good job - the whole time I wished I was seeing Andrea Martin. (and it sure didn't help that at the same Saturday night performance, Patina Miller was out.)

Posted: 10/22/13 at 3:45pmI hope I'm not the only one who didn't think Andrea Martin was so obsessively amazing in Pippin. I saw both her and Tovah and thought they both were delightful in the tiny part. As was said before by others, for me the standout was Rachel Bay Jones whose Catherine was the highlight of Act 2 (and almost the entire show) and I wish she had gotten as much praise as was given to Andrea Martin.
