Edna isnt meant to be jewish. In the Bway show there are atleast two lines to indicate that: Edna herself says to Wilbur :you dont look jewish. And Velma says "hes black and a jew"- if Tracy were meant to be Jewish it wouldve been a plot point. Besides tracy makes the sign of the cross in the dream sequence where shes marrying Link.

With a name like Turnblad? I thought she was Jewish.
Anyway, Edna's character is an over protective Mother and one of the most important character in the show. I think she needs to be in the sequel.

I bet Nathan Lane would make a good Edna. He is also a movie star but I would prefer Harvey and or Bruce Vilanch.

i dont buy that description of Edna. An overprotective mother is Prudy, but really both fall short in my mind when their kids manage to hop on a bus to a platter party without their knowledge or permission.

The importance of Edna in the first is to contrast the effect of their weight on their lives. It doesnt get in Tracys way at all and it completely destroyed Edna's ability to do normal activities like leave her house. After participating in a protest, dancing on TV, and starting her life again- how could that hold true anymore? Shes unnecessary unless their viewpoints differ.

Dont get me wrong, they certainly could further the story of Edna, I just dont think its essential... it all depends on where they want to go with a sequel.

Without Edna it would be sad. In my opinion Edna is the most important character aside from Tracy.

You have seen the show a lot more than most people but I hope they have Edna in all sequels. Even better would be a second Hairspray show on Broadway!

It is deeply depressing that Hairspray will close. It had a wonderful run, but it will be missed.

I don't think Edna is portrayed as an overprotective mother at all.

And the name "Turnblad" was one thing that told me they weren't Jewish.

Oh, for the record, I don't see where a sequel is called for. I won't see it anyway, so whatever.

When Travolta says he won't wear the fat suit, maybe he wants to justify gaining 100 pounds - his weight sure goes up and down with regularity. I'm sure he'd enjoy a good pig-out as a method actor.

Or maybe we could have CGI Edna -- so many other movies have been ruined by it, why not this one?
