Michael Bennett - I think I love you, I couldn't agree more with everything you said! Sometimes some communities such as ours becomes way to insular, and this thread is a perfect example.
As for John Travolta not having any career in the last ten years... Ladder 49 did earn $75 million in the US in 2004, worldwide it was in the end about $102 million. If this movie even gets close to that, we'll have a hit on our hands. Plus I can also tell people that for some unknown reason Travolta is also rediculously popular in Europe and Australia and his name still brings in alot of money.

So what? Arnold Schwarzenegger is insanely popular in Japan but does that mean that we should cast him as Edna as well?
Just because someone is a name does not mean that they will perform the role well. If a celebrity is a name but they are crap in the movie, thats not going to draw in audiences either. They should cast who is right for the role. Period.

Oh yes, lets all pre-judge John Travolta in this role now before even one frame has been filmed because we, and only we are the be all and end all experts on this.
This is the sort of fan wanking that pisses me right off.

Im not saying that Travolta will be bad, I am saying that there was no need to recast it and casting names for the sake of names is a very stupid thing to do.

And who said they signed him for the sake of having names in the film? Maybe...and this is just a theory...HE DID WELL ENOUGH THAT THEY HAD A REASON TO SIGN HIM! I am by no means a Travolta fan, and I'm not going to see this either, but I hate this bullhockey where people think stars are being casted for star names when they might actually have the talent to pull it off. Makes me sick.

Are you honestly trying to tell me that Travolta played a better Edna that Harvey? Thats a bit of stretch to say the least.

dirty rotten guy- lets take a look at the modern movie musical broken down by success anf failure in the grand sceme of things (box office etc.) *= looks like its gonna fit
Success:....................Failure:
Chicago.....................Phantom of the Opera
Moulin Rouge................Rent
Dreamgirls*.................The Producers
the column on the left had one thing in common- Big names in the leads. The Producers tried, but just using them for supporting roles doesn't do the trick. Lets face it, Harvey is great but billing Harvey and a no-name girl above the title isn't exactly going to be a box office draw.

No and I totally understand that but I am saying if they are only casting for names, which at this point looks like they are, then there is a good chance the perfomances will suck. And if that is the case they wont make much money at the box office either.
Also, although Moulin Rouge was critically acclaimed, it had a final grossing of 57 million in the box office and the budget was estimated at 52 million, which is by no means a "success". So casting big name stars doesnt mean that it will be box office gold...

I think Latifah is fabulous in Chicago. And she isn't younger than the lady I saw in Hairspray tour. I think Hairspray movie should thank god to get her.

As always, Margo hits the nail on the head! As much as I love, Queen Latifah, I have to wonder if she really is the right person for the part. And I really think Travolta is a mistake! I feel it's better to maintain the integrity of a show than to cast box office names. Ironically, I'm watching "Hello Dolly" as I type this. No one would argue that Streisand is a great talent, but she was sorely miscast as Dolly.

Does anyone else think it would be more fun to see John Goodman and Rick Moranis as Edna and Wilbur instead?
Dean: Can I tell you something?
Lorraine: That depends on what it is.
Dean: I think you're really really pretty.
Lorraine: (after a pause) Ok, you can tell me that.
