Honestly, dolly, *I* could sing that song and the audience would go nuts. It's like "Ol' Man River" in that sense. I first saw Jose Ferrer in the part. True, his voice was more operatic than Williams', but Ferrer was no Kiley either. The show still worked.
I wouldn't call Williams a "crooner". His voice is too bright. He's more a traditional Broadway singer.
If the show were to play here on the West Coast, I'd keep an open mind and take my chances.
