at tonight's show (Sat, 5-4) just before Cecily and Tom came on stage at the start of act two, a piece of the scenery fell down from the fly space. It looked like it was the shade from the ticket window from the bus station. It was a close call. If it had fallen on either of them, it would have caused an injury. A stage hand came out and removed it amd them show went on. For the next few minutes, Cecily and Tom kept looking up in the area from where the piece had fallen. they were both pros and the show kept going.

Glad no one was hurt. Odd that they didn't stop the show to examine the flyspace and make sure everything was OK.

"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

I wondered the same thing. I was in the first row and i kept looking up. Tom and Cecily were laughing (in character) and the audience kept laughing....since no one got hurt.

Will this mean it will lose any of its Tony nominations?

I was also in the audience last night, seated in the middle of the orchestra. The actors handled it fairly well, but it did interfere with the mood a little bit...it happened during the transition to the Bountiful set, so what was supposed to be a "wow, I finally made it to my home" moment became "what just happened? what fell? Is anything else going to fall?" moment. I was quite nervous during the first 10-15 mins of the scene because the entire elevated set was bobbing up and down slightly for a little while. I doubt the set was supposed to be visible at all, so maybe it didn't rise all the way up...I was genuinely concerned something else would fall and one of the actors would be injured. I think since there were no more set changes, the stage manager (or whoever decides this) felt it was safe to continue without an interruption.

Youre right....the set piece was swaying quite a bit for a while. I think they were looking up to be a little funny, but also to make sure nothing else would come down!!
