Here's my recap of the finale.
Singing. Song choice is so important. You have to chose a song that suits (and shows off) your voice and suits your personality. Liam's choice and performance was the best.
Haley: Wobbly.
Kaitlyn: Chose to sing Cabaret as a happy, sassy song.
Liam: Song played up his likeability and ingenuousness (Cynthia Dale looked like she would melt). Winner.
Leah: Questionable song choice, didn't show off her voice.
David: Funny song, a tad oversold. But likeable.
Hailey: Thought she would do a better job at Maybe This Time.
Acting. (Marvin Hamlisch's blank expression is hilarious.)
Liam. Oh my god. I predicted someone would do The Glass Menagerie, but think David would have done this better. Liam is more Gentleman Caller than Tom Wingfield.
Kaitlyn. Again, miscasting. Kaitlyn doesn't have the knowing and the pent up sexuality of Maggie the Cat.
Hailey. Didn't really do anything for me.
David. Are the actors given direction, or are they just doing this on their own? I feel like all of these contestants acted better under the tutelage of their teachers. These performances are lacking.
Haley. Why is everybody acting from American Classics? Arthur Miller. Tennessee Williams. Was it intentional to do shows from the same era?
Leah. Ding. Leah wins round 2.
Dancing. Could they not sing as well as dance? They're not trying out for the chorus. (How come no Kiss of the Spider Woman or Curtains, both Kander and Ebb shows? I would have liked to have heard David sing Dressing Them Up) Best dancer: David.
And the winner is... Leah. No surprise to me. I think she's the best actor, and a capable dancer and singer.
As a send off... group song: New York, New York? Where's the Canadian content?
Coach Bob knew it all along: you've got to get obsessed and stay obsessed. You have to keep passing the open windows. (John Irving, The Hotel New Hampshire)
