I guess I don't characterize inability to use a cell phone as "suffering."
Well said.
Winston, you make me laugh.

and think the worse is for flights, where people's, including their own, lives could be in danger without proper signals being reached! Just look at the guy crashing the train in LA because he was texting!
I guess the Shubert is trying something because when I saw Speed-the-Plow the other night, they did a noise which had like 10 different phones with different rings ringing at the same time.
But I guess 13 is going to be a bad influence for our youth when they demand you turn the phone on at intermission and text your friends!
I agree with all of you, if I am so important and have 50 other things to worry about, I shouldn't be in there!

One of the biggest problems with mobile phones/Cell phones is for the Front Of House staff.
We are very strict on things like this here in the UK and i know at the theatre i work that the moment a phone is seen to come on the Ushers are done there quick time.
With us been a touring house we have the producers of the shows to answer to if the phones can be seen for the stage, not because they are distracting as such but because the actors/producers etc can mistake them for cameras.
The FOH staff at our theatre know this so wont put up with it.

And when we ask them to put them away they respond with, "Oh I'm just reading the Playbill." Yes we see that thank you. It doesn't make it any less annoying to the people around you.
