From what I read on the website, there is no way of obtaining the tickets online besides the virtual line method?

I believe that is correct. The summer sponsor deal ended already I think.

How crowded does the ticket line usually get when they give them out?

You might still be able to get a ticket for $170 through the Summer Supporter program. I got an e-mail from them just a few days ago.

I haven't done it this year...but reports are that people not in line before 6 or 6:30 have been lucky to have gotten vouchers.

I did get in the stand-by line and get a ticket I believe the first Sunday it played...I got there at 4, but with the pretty weather and reviews, that time might move up as well.
