Well, I bought it and listened to it for the first time tonight. Worst star vehicle? Worst score by major talents (Vernon Duke, Ogden Nash)? I think it may be. Ankles Aweigh is My Fair Lady by comparison.
What did you think you were getting? Woman of the Year?
No, I knew its reputation... I was just so taken aback by the amateurish nature of the score, particularly the lyrics.
I was tempted, but after reading that mini review of yours I'll steer clear of it. Thanks for saving me the money!
In a way, I want to tell you to get it, alter ego, because it's not to be believed. But not in that fun-bad Whoop-Up kind of way.
I'd heard the show before but had forgotten how truly awful it was until I played the CD last week. Usually if a show's music doesn't appeal to me the first time around, after repeated listenings I'll usually find something worthwhile. In this case I fear the more I'd listen to it, the more I'd dislike it.Geez, even Kate Hepburn sounds better on "Coco". After hearing Davis' voice I no longer have any desire to hear her vocals from "Ms. Moffit" if it does indeed exist somewhere. The music from such a reputable song writing team seems to be on par with the star's vocal abilities. If you feel you need to buy it out of curiosity just go to Amazon.com and give a listen to "Turn Me Loose On Broadway" or better yet...lol.."Go Along, Sadie"...simply the worst. Even Ellen Hanley, whose voice I love on "Fiorello" and "Boys From Syracuse" is given terrible material to sing and although Tina Louise was in the show she has no songs. The CD'S only redeeming quality are the bonus cuts of music not from the show.
I actually thought maybe this thread was about the hysterical British sitcom Elaine Stritch did in the 70s! Now available on DVD! A much better buy that the Bette Davis album...

Me too!!! And that had a better score.
"Two's Company, ordinarily, two's company..."
"How we embark on old Noah's ark, pair by pair..."
I have a soft spot for "Coco" too theatertrash. I guess regardless of my love for Kate though, before hearing Bette sing, I always gave her the "William Hung" award for sheer beauty of voice with Bacall a close runnerup.

Hahaha. :) It's the selling not the singing, I always say.
