Good stuff
"Over at the Brooks Atkinson, that other critics' darling who was dinged last week - Twyla Tharp - is taking a f - - k you attitude. Literally.
The day after her new musical "The Times They Are A-Changin' " opened to the worst reviews of any show this season, Tharp gathered her cast together onstage and said (according to someone who was there): "Look, we didn't get what we were hoping for but f - - k this! We're staying here and we're going to fight!"
Tharp did feel "battered" by the reivews, but she's not one to crawl under the covers feeling sorry for herself. She told the cast she was going to be at the theater every night, prompting Michael Arden, one of the show's stars, to jokingly break down in tears.
The cast adores Tharp, but she's a taskmaster who routinely hits performers with reams of notes.
Jokes an insider: "These kids are sweating their guts out every night, and she'll go backstage and say: 'You should do those splits five seconds faster.' "
Tharp's producers are joining the fight. They've slashed their weekly overhead, rolled out a television commercial and are vowing to keep the struggling show on the boards at least until the end of the year.
"We'll see what happens," says a production source. "But right now, nobody's talking about closing.""

This ought to have been titled "Twyla to the audience, "F*ck you."
I try to find something good about a show (the cast is very talented and the songs are good), but Tharp who is Bob Dylan's co-star for Times/Changin', does below sub-standard work. Her staging is mediocre at best.
Close it and save the investors' money. Sad.

Many audience members have enjoyed this show.
Let the producers do what they want.

Tharp is a choreographer and NOT a director. That's problem #1
Unlike "Movin' Out," this show is not only about the dancers. If you saw Arden on The View you could tell he had absolutely no direction (not his fault). He didn't seem to know if he was supposed to move around the stage, pretend the play the guitar, etc...
To make a show like this work, a good director should have been hired. The three lead singers looked lost in this production.
With a good director and better story line, this show could have worked.

Posted: 11/2/06 at 1:16pmAs odd as this production looked on The View, I'd still go see it. I enjoyed the music I heard on The View, and how the cast performed vocally. The visuals were scary--- I don't enjoy clowns, so clowns freaked me out. But, Micheal and the cast sang the song very well, at the least, it should get a cast recording.

A little bit of an over reaction.
Didn't MOVIN OUT open to awful reviews? Then it was closed, redone, then reopened?

Didn't she give that same speech to the cast after the reviews came in for SINGIN' IN THE RAIN?

From the begining I felt the whole concept was a bad idea and couldn't understand why anyone would go for it ($$$ money wise)
I know Twyla has a brilliant rep and "Movin' Out " was a success ( Not necc by my standards) but still the songs of Bob Dylan? I hear an ego @ work.
