http://www.playbill.com/news/article/90254.html (and now Playbill gets its theater news from the NYPost?)
Though I think they are waiting to announce officially, this sounds like it's getting closer to reality.
I would have loved to have seen Theron in the role but I think Thurman is an improvement over Kidman and frankly, at this point, so close to production, they aren't going to have too many box office draw choices when most actresses are already signed to projects for early in the year.
If Thurman can sing and dance reasonably well, she should be fine. Don't know much about her skills in that area. I do know that she will be more convincing in the role in terms of physical looks and build than Kidman would be.

She has the boobs for the role - she can be warm and funny- she'll be fine. Hey, at this point ANYONE is better than Kidman.
If worse comes to worse, she can be dubbed and have a double in for the long dancing shots.

re: UMA AS ULLA#4
Posted: 12/22/04 at 10:56amI don't remember ever hearing her sing but on looks alone I think it's perfect casting. I just hope she's able to use some of her kickass KILL BILL moves at some point in the film.
re: UMA AS ULLA#5
Posted: 12/22/04 at 11:08amI think it's a good career move for her. Who knows? She may be quite a surprise. I've never heard her sing, but she might turn out to have the chops for it. It's definitely a different role for her...though not too unlike her role in "The Truth About Cats and Dogs"...I think she'll be quite good.

MaTake: If you want to search for threads about who SHOULD be Ulla...they are legend and stretch back a long way.
If you want to consider a) who is available on such short notice and b) who will meet the box office requirements of Universal...
in other words all things considered: Thurman is not such a bad choice. She's not my FIRST choice but we are way past dream casting here. It's time to make a decision and move on toward production dates.
re: UMA AS ULLA#8
Posted: 12/22/04 at 12:41pmI am familiar with those threads. I understand time is essential. Hopefully it will go well. I like Uma and she is beautiful, I've just always seen her in action flicks.

re: UMA AS ULLA#11
Posted: 12/22/04 at 3:18pmThat's the question though. CAN she sing? She doesn't have a particularly strong speaking voice; I doubt she'd be a very good singer. If she's not good, they had better dubb her...however, I do agree that she's a better choice than Nicole Kidman, who's too delicate, and actually isn't that good of a singer either (sorry, Moulin Rougue fans). I still feel bad for Cady Huffman though...there really is no reason to have a "name" actor playing Ulla. Why don't they just give it to Huffman?
re: UMA AS ULLA#12
Posted: 12/22/04 at 3:21pmBy the way, usually when Playbill.com or Broadway.com posts something about someone being "approached" or "in negotiations" to play a role, 90% of the time it's true and comes to fruition, so Uma probably will get the role, fortunately or unfortunately.
re: UMA AS ULLA#13
Posted: 12/22/04 at 3:30pmI shot a few scenes in "Prime" with her and she was walking around on set singing "Don't Cry For Me Argentina." Not loudly, of course, but she was on key and she had a pleasant, quiet voice. I don't know if she can bust out with a belt, but she can carry a tune.

re: UMA AS ULLA#15
Posted: 12/22/04 at 4:41pmWell I still want Sara Gettelfinger but I think Uma is a much better choice.
re: UMA AS ULLA#16
Posted: 12/22/04 at 5:21pmI also wish it didn't have to be a "name." Cady would be great and we all know she could do it and be fabulous. Oh well. Sing away, UMA!

wow, yet another smack in the face of the beautiful cady huffman.
what is up with brooks and stroman.
do they really need a "big name" in the role of ulla...
i mean the majority of the movie-going public know who nathan lane and matthew broderick are...
that's enough box office draw right there...
why did they choose to exclude huffman from recreating her broadway role and let almost everybody else recreate theirs?
IMO i would have preferred either huffman or jane krakowski.

Posted: 12/22/04 at 5:28pmRemember people have to look good on camera and be able to do it. When they sing in a movie, the voice was already pre-recorded. sometimes actors don't do a good job making it look real...

Eh, Nicole Kidman is definitely better looking than Uma, in my opinion. She's got a weird nose.
Seriously, though, I am not familiar with any of Uma's work. I just hope they don't plaster "UMA THURMAN" above the title on the show's poster.

i just came back from The Foreigner and in Matthew's bio it says he will be in the film version of Mel Brooks' The Producers with Nathan Lane and Nicole Kidman, directed by Susan Stroman - funny, eh?
But i guess since the change was just announced this month - i'm curious if it'll change next month...

Not thrilled. Not dismayed. Wish it had been Jane K but, if wishes were fishes...
How well can she dance?
