paradox, you got a lot of financial and critical hits in your list--i doubt anyone would call them underrated, but i agree about the ANYONE CAN WHISTLE revival....
my votes:
JELLY'S LAST JAM--absolutely amazing on every level
RAGTIME--this is the show that could and should be running RIGHT NOW!!!

Smile, Big, Seussical, She Loves Me, The Apple Tree.
Question: Why do people think that Little Shop of Horrors is under-rated? If I recall it ran for 7 years in its original production, not to mention had a movie version of it. And had productions of it all over every high school in the country. There have been tours of it, and there is one of it right now. Because there was an unsuccessful revival of it doesn't mean it's under-rated, I mean Fiddler on the roof has had many unsuccessful revivals. Just my 2 cents.

La Boheme is hardly an under-rated musical, given that it's an opera. And one of the most performed operas in repertory in any opera company. Baz Lurhmann's production was interesting, but hardly groundbreaking

I'll agree with Side Show, Urinetown and Bat Boy, which is my new obsession. Comfort and Joy is back in my head again thanks to this thread AHHHHHH!
I think that Sweeney Todd is underated in some circles, but I think it does have a big audience and it got a lot of critical acclaim.

Show Me Where the Good Times Are (Thuna/Roberts/Jacobson) - based on The Imaginary Invalid (Moliere) - great central role for male.

THE most underrated musical is, without a doubt, CHILDREN OF EDEN.
Every other musical people have mentioned a lot of people love. But, there is very little lovin' for this amazing show...which has never even had a Broadway birth!

When someone blunders, we say that he makes a misstep. Is it then not clear that all the ills of mankind, all the tragic misfortunes that fill our history books, all the political blunders, all the failures of the great leaders have arisen merely from a lack of skill in dancing. - Moliere

GRIND has a most excellent score.
"Real friends are very special, but you have to be careful because sometimes you have a friend and you think they are made of rock, then suddenly you realise they're only made of sand."
Maria Callas (American soprano. 1923-1977)
