That's my luck for you, this is why I never see plays on Broadway, they always close when I decide I want to see one. lol.
Are there and comedic plays out now? Because I did see 'Noises Off' which I loved, so is there anything to that nature?

Posted: 8/23/04 at 2:07pmThe Foreigner is very funny, darkly so, but very funny all the same!

Posted: 8/23/04 at 2:18pmYeah I have to agree. I'm not too excited about this season. Yes there are a few things I'm waiting for and going to see (Spamalot, La Cage Aux Folix, The Frogs, Dracula, Pajama Game)But I have to say this past season was one of my favorites for shows. At least a season of good musicals that hasn't been around in a while.

Here's a list of comedic plays coming to Off-Broadway in the next couple of months (the new season Off-Broadway is, as always, more interesting than the new season On-):
"Last Easter" by Byrony Lavery, a new comedy from the author of "Frozen" starring Veanne Cox, Jeffrey Carlson, and Clea Lewis begins performances at the Lucille Lortel Theatre on September 15th.
"White Chocolate," a comedy about a wealthy white couple who awakes one morning to find that they have turned black, begins performances at the Century Theatre September 21st.
"Jewtopia," a new comedy about a gentile who goes undercover into the Jewish world with the hope of finding a wife, begins performances at the West Side Theatre on September 28th.
"Dirty Tricks," a new play about Martha Mitchell starring Judith Ivey begins performances at the Public on October 5th.
"The Foreigner" with Matthew Broderick begins performances October 15th.
"Doubt," a new play by John Patrick Shanley starring Cherry Jones begins performances at MTC November 3rd.
"A Second Hand Memory," a new comedy by Woody Allen begins performances at The Atlantic in November.

Posted: 8/23/04 at 2:31pmExcept for special engagements Margo...I felt The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby was well worth the $100 pricetag...both in 1981 and 1986! Actually, it did contain quite a bit of music, and even singing which resulted in an album and then CD.
re: Uninteresting Season, 2004-2005#31
Posted: 8/23/04 at 2:40pmYes, and the all-star limited engagement of "Long Day's Journey" last season with Redgrave, Denehey, PS Hoffman and Robert Sean Leonard was $100, and the hit revival of "Raisin" was $95 with no discounts -- but those sort of productions are the exception and not the rule. These days, straight plays on Broadway, generally speaking, simply don't attract the kinds of audiences that musicals do (unfortunately), so steep discounts are almost always available.

Has anyone seen the Off-Broadway show, "On the Verge"? I saw that also , and loved it!

Posted: 8/23/04 at 2:44pmY'all left out Michael Frayn's DEMOCRACY, with James Naughton, Richard Thomas, Robert Prosky and Michael Cumpsty, directed by Michael Blakemore.

Posted: 8/23/04 at 2:48pmYep - and the other neglected musical that Matt won't acknowledge for some reason is OPPOSITE OF SEX.

Posted: 8/23/04 at 2:57pmWhy did Reidel call Dame Edna 'greedy' last week? What has he done other than work hard and be successful?
re: Uninteresting Season, 2004-2005#37
Posted: 8/23/04 at 2:58pmOPPOSITE OF SEX hasn't been confirmed for this season at this point and they haven't booked a theatre. It's unclear whether it'll make it here this season or wait until 2005-2006
re: Uninteresting Season, 2004-2005#38
Posted: 8/23/04 at 2:59pmAnd also, Mary-Louise Parker, Debra Monk, Rosie Perez and Michael O'Keefe in RECKLESS!

Posted: 8/23/04 at 3:38pmI'm definitley looking forward to Brooklyn.. and I'll probably see Little Women and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels because both Sherie Rene Scott and Norbert are amazing.. but if it wasn't for them I probably wouldn't go see it. I'm looking forward to seeing BARE even though it's off-broadway..

Did you hear me?
Dame Edna is coming back. Who is excited?
I for one am so happy I ordered the beauty some gladiolas.
I really think gladiolas are the ugliest flower around.
But this Dame loves Dame Edna.

Posted: 8/23/04 at 3:45pmI'm only seeing Little Women for Sutton Foster. The show is going to be boring. I had to read the book and I hated it.

ahhhhhhh..... you sound like my aunt. and that's not a good thing. she loves dame edna. i just don't see what's so great about it. i went to see it back when it was at the booth theatre. i hated it. i'd rather sit through the 3 hours of hell that les mis was for me. (the cast was just bad when i saw it.)

Spamalot should be fun and with any luck, Butley will hit late in 2005 as well as Harmony. There is hope on the horizon but things look pretty dull in the near future.
We can hope for some rewrites and excitement on the La Cage revival and perhaps Pacific Overtures will not disappoint.

Posted: 8/23/04 at 7:05pmI am looking forward to Spamalot, Dirty Rotten... and perhaps Beehive will be a reality and I'll have all of my favorite women back on Broadway, in the same season (Gonzalez, Orfeh and Sheri Scott). Although I haven't heard a word about Beehive anywhere other than Stage Notes. I'm into the levity theme. I did all my serious shows this season. Caroline, Frozen. I am My own wife, etc...I'm ready to laugh.
