I'm waiting for the announcement that Bab's is directing it as well.
Trust me, she will be (if not officially).
No she won't be - if the director they are circling does indeed sign on, Babs will be working under a very tough cookie.
Universal, btw, is apparently hoping this starts production January.
I was watching the film version of Evita earlier and marveled at how young they made Madonna look during the scenes where she's supposed to be a 15 year-old.
Then the camera closed in during "Eva Beware of the City" and the Material Girl's 30-something reality shattered the illusion for a sec, but only whenever she'd make any strong expressions--her neck gets all wobbly and loose, making Eva appear to momentarily age 25+ years. Ah, the magic of Hollywood.
Like someone else said, Babs will be OK because nobody cares about Gypsy Rose Lee's momma. And I generally don't think being totally accurate is that important when it comes to age with the vast majority of roles. There's a reason nobody flinched when Madonna appeared as a 15-year old Eva on screen...nobody cares about the real Eva because most didn't know who she is, and even if they did, it's not something they feel passionate enough about to raise a stink over. Leave that to people like me, and even I don't care.
Now if Babs was cast as a 15 year old, then we'd have a slight problem. Even then, the theatre lover in me would at least find it worth investing some suspension of disbelief for the screen, if only for someone like Babs Streisand.
...so wait a moment here, BABS isn't playing Norma Desmond in the film version of the musical SUNSET BOULEVARD?...oh f**k!...oh well...i will still be waiting in line for the first show at my local movie house...any chance to see LA BABS before she really does fade into the mists of yester year..I LOVE ME SOME BABS..

"so wait a moment here, BABS isn't playing Norma Desmond in the film version of the musical SUNSET BOULEVARD?"
She's waiting until she turns 80 to play that role.
Plus she has to wait for Andrew Loyd-Webber to figure out how Norma will sing "The Greatest Star of All" and "Sunset Boulevard".
Rose never had such great nails.
Oh, crap. I had blocked Barbra's nails from my mind. They freak me out. Like how Namo feels about Rachel Maddow's blue eyeshadow.
A Ken Russell/Barbra Streisand Gypsy might have worked. If only he were still alive.

If only they had let Ken Russell film several more musicals!
first they (you) came for Lea Michelle...and ripped that poor young girl to shreds,( never minding that she can sing the **** out of most songs!)...next they (you)came for Barbra Steisand...she's: too old/nails too long and pretty/she can't sing anymore...
jeez is it all Jewish Diva's they (you) don't like?..what's the deal here?

I smell a new word for the Urban Dictionary....
Antisemisogyny.

So, the director being "circled" is a tough cookie? That lets out Rob Marshall, and there is really only one tough cookie director working today - David Fincher. And one can easily see that he's the perfect director for Gypsy :)
I would be very surprised if this film were before the cameras in January, given there is NO director at this time and that the screenwriter hasn't even begun the adaptation.
"Antisemisogyny"...lol...very clever...and if you dont submit it to the Urban Dictinary, I just might...i got street cred with them now...:)
