The marymount audition thread inspired me to write one of my own.
I am auditioning for the U Mich School of Music next month, i'm hoping to major in musical theatre, and I was wondering if anyone has been through the process and had any advice?

I know a few kids who have already auditioned there, and a couple have already been accepted. I'm curious but why is your audition not until April? That's really late and with a rolling admission school like UMich, that could be a definite disadvantage. A few of the comments I've heard from my friends: make sure you have your essay done, take the advice they give you about preferring black clothing for auditions, be well-prepared with your monologue and songs, and do well on the piano part of the audition. Get lots of rest. Stay near the north campus, if possible, where the music program is. Plan on spending the entire day so don't have flight plans out til that evening if you're flying. Break a leg!

Consider the fact that you may be making a serious mistake by doing musical theatre in college. College is ap place for learning. Not playing.

bronx~ majoring in musical theatre isn't "playing." If a student feels that they want to do something related to musical theatre as a career, why not major in it? And many BFA programs (which I know UMich is for musical theatre) are a TON of work, and not just "play."

...it makes me mad when people don't recognize all the work that BFA/ musical theatre students do.

*break a leg, cw~*

awkward.

i think theatre is a legitimate form of learning. it has its own venutres into psychology and a good music theatre school will have major emphasis on music theory/pedagogy.

i believe that physics, biology, and calculus are not the only subjects that require true study - there is much to learn about theatre and music that include historical and cultural studies along with skill training and professional preparation.
