Posted: 8/14/03 at 1:49pmThere are all these plans for "Shrek the Musical," etc. and now a "Legally Blonde the Musical." Do these ever pull through. What past musicals like this have made it on broadway?

Posted: 8/14/03 at 2:27pmWhat's so 'unusual' about these properties? They seem a bit new but, otherwise, they seem like perfectly sensible ideas for musicals. No stranger than 'Hairspray' or 'The Full Monty' or anything else.

While I may not get many to agree with me, at the very least, I would hope you'd all understand my sentiment here:
I think it's great that musicals are still going as strong as they are in this day and age with all the movies, computers, and technology alone. Look at Broadway PLAYS. They don't last long because they don't sell tickets. They're still being produced, and I'm sure no one will disagree that they should be.
That being said, imagine you are a lover of musicals and broadway (which I think it safe to assume we all are)and now think about every penny to your name. Cash, savings, property, belongings, etc. Anything that's worth something. You invest EVERYTHING into a show (what Producers do) and hope that it does well. This is why "stunt casting" occurs. This is why commodities like Legally Blonde, Shreck, etc. are chosen to be "turned into" Broadway shows. They're already a proven favorite with audiences. So, while unusual to those of us who grew up on quality musical theatre over the years - these ideas may seem crazy. But it takes a vision, and a good team of people, and if you really look back at what your favorite musicals are, back then they were probably viewed the same way. A stupid idea. Disney putting their animated features live on stage - - never will it run long. (Hmmm...) A modern retelling of La Boehem set in the village - - that's stupid! (Hmmm...)
My point is this: SHOW BUSINESS is more about the latter word in that phrase then the former. It's a business plain and simple.
I love all the leading male and female broadway stars - past and present. Those who succeed in NY theatre do so because of their passion for their craft. Not the money or the fame.
While we might rather see a revival of A CHORUS LINE as opposed to LEGALLY BLONDE - the musical, one point to ponder is - there's nothing wrong with NEW and DIFFERENT, even UNUSUAL, because it may bring a whole new group of people to the theatre... it may bring a whole new group of creative minds to put a show together... nothing bad can come of it. And the bottom line is, if all these unusual shows open and they're really bad, everyone will PROBABLY agree that they are and then we can all rejoice when the shows that are wholeheartedly embraced receive all the awards in that particular season!
That's my 2 cents... thanks!

Everyone Poops should be a musical!!!! I love that idea.
Other shows that could be considered unusual could be
CARRIE
But I agree. With tend to think that they might be unusual but then we love them. I thought Debbie Does Dallas would be horrible but I loved every minute of it. (And literally, I would not want to do DEBBIE -- maybe her boyfriend but....)
