Theater owners fought, and rightly so, attempts by NYS to tax admissions. The state is really going overboard with the proposed budget and the ripple effect will be felt on Broadway going forward.
Back to the topic is the fact that while not wanting the state to tax, they feel free to continue to increase facility fees. The latest for the Eugene O Neill is $ 2 a pop.
We should start a lottery as to which theater & when will hit the $ 5 facility fee. No longer interested in nickles & dimes, the fees are increasing for larger amounts and more frequently. I see the $ 5 in 2/3 years

Posted: 3/29/09 at 8:04pmCould you explain to me what this is about? Is it a tax on each ticket sold? I don't live in the U.S. so I'm not familiar with this.

alterego, The senator said that to help the state in this hard economic times. He was going to tax each theatre ticket sold. Roxy is just bitching because it is one more thing he has to pay for and feel is the cause of Obama being in office.
I feel that they should tax theatre tickets because you don't need them to live. Currently, the things that are not being taxed are those which are things that you would need to live. Such as food and clothing. You don't NEED theatre tickets to live. It isn't like you would die without your does of Broadway theatre. So, in that regard I don't see what Roxy is bitching about.

Posted: 3/29/09 at 8:25pmHe's not even bitching about that since that plan is no more. Now he's bitching about the POSSIBILITY of the facility fees going up. He's manufacturing things to complain about.

EVERYTHING rises in price. Can you still send a letter for a dime? (And yes, I'm that old) Yes, eventually that "surcharge" will hit five bucks. Big deal. You are looking for something to get in a frenzy over. It's not a conspiracy.
If you hate the cost so much, why do you keep attending the theater? That could be your own private boycott.

Posted: 3/30/09 at 8:20amSo as it is, there is no sales tax on theatre tickets? That surprises me. Here in Australia there is a 10% sales tax on each ticket sold.
re: Up Up & Away#10
Posted: 3/30/09 at 9:13amCorrect, AlterEgo. There was talk about begining a tax on it, but that was defeated.

Posted: 3/30/09 at 10:40amIt wouldn't be BWW without Roxy bitching about taxes and ticket prices.
