re: Update on 'Carousel' Movie Musical

Thats what I used to believe, roquat, but the power of the '94 revival really brought home how Billy can't express himself without aggression until he meets Julie. She, by the force of her own feeling for him, is able to reach him at a level no other human could. Her love is that powerful.

Billy however remain emotionally immature but clearly has a conscience. Julie is the only person who can accept him and not judge him. The tragedy is that it takes his own death for him to realize how much he really loved her and how true, powerful and ever lasting that love is.

The "world beyond" aspect of CAROUSEL makes us see a bigger picture. Its not about justifying domestic violence, but seeing that - at least in the world of the show - love and hope have redemptive powers.

It is a delicate balance between the ugliness of the real world and the need and call for unconditional love that makes CAROUSEL brilliant and important.

I think that is a lesson we can still learn.

Do I have a fear that it will spawn and justify domestic violence? No.

Do I think that there is a danger that someone might stay in an abusive relationship because they saw CAROUSEL. Possibly. But that is a danger in all art.

I'm still waiting for that woman to use CHICAGO as a defense for killing her cheating lover.

Forgive my rambling...

I'm not saying a movie of CAROUSEL would justify or promulgate domestic abuse, just that modern audiences would have a hard time understanding why Julie doesn't leave Billy at the first sign of violence. They would care less about Billy's soul being saved than about Julie getting clear of him. This is at it should be--I'm sure women who saw the original production (or the movie version) thought the same thing (whether or not they said it.)

I'd be the first in line at the box office for front row seats. And I'd bring a camera. And tissues. For when I cry from laughter.

re: Update on 'Carousel' Movie Musical

The problem with Carousel, even with today's audiences isn't its realism... it's the surrealism.

They couldn't even figure out how to do it right in the '50s, and added that terrible star keeper scene at the very beginning that SUNK the film. They were going for the "It's a Wonderful Life" approach... and it backfired into glittery '50s cheese whiz instead, and derailed the entire movie in the first five minutes. They didn't stand a chance after that, no matter how hard the cast tried.

Still, Carousel is a surreal piece... and there's no avoiding that final act, when Billy goes back down to earth to try and amend his sins. It would take a film director with a great amount of imagination both visually and as a story teller to pull it off on the big screen. Look at Fritz Lang's flm of "Liliom" (the story on which Carousel is based), who also directed Metropolis and M, and you'll see what is called for. I would like to see what Baz Luhrmann could do with it. Or (once he comes up from air on Dreamgirls) what Bill Condon could do with it.

The director of Carousel is FAR more important than who is cast... Although perhaps not to the movie-going audiences. They'll need marquee names to get them in to see something like this. But without a visionary director... it doesnt stand a chance, no matter how high and well Mr. Bigelow can belt the Soliloquy.
