How long did this show run for?
I've always thought it didn't run long enough... I so badly wanted to see it, and probably won't now. But it sounded so good! I really must get the soundtrack...

I was so upset that Hunter Foster left before I saw the show, but then I was excited because I loooove Tom Cavanaugh because he's too cute in Ed (although I hear iffy things about his Bobby Strong) & THEN I was upset that HE was leaving but then I saw Luther Creek & all was right with the world
Daniel Marcus (Officer Barrel) took me backstage & onstage after the show! It's a long story how that happened, but it was so fun & I cried like an idiot right in front of him.
I'm so sad the show closed. I walked up 43rd a few weeks ago & saw the construction site & I was like "Wow, I wonder what used to be there" & then I remembered! It was so sad.

Urinetown ran for 965 performances - about two and a half years. It had a very respectable run, actually, AND made a profit, which few expected it would do when it made the move to Broadway, and opened in the wake of September 11th.
As far as the "Cop Song," it is specifically referencing the "Army Song" from The Threepenny Opera, but I don't suspect that everyone here is up on their Brecht/Weill. A listen to Threepenny will bring out even more of Urinetown's references. Although it doesn't lift the melody, the Urinetown Overture is almost a note for note homage to the Threepenny Overture. The opening number, "Urinetown" sounds a little like Threepenny's "Moritat," and "Privilege to Pee" is like a marriage of "Peachum's Morning Hymn" and the "Instead-Of Song".
After that, "Follow Your Heart" ventures into Marc Blitzstein/Cradle Will Rock territory, but by the time they get to the Lez Miz ("Act One Finale")/Fiddler ("What Is Urinetown?")/West Side Story ("Snuff That Girl") and Guys & Dolls ("Run, Freedom, Run") parodies, most people are on more comfortable ground.

Am i missing something?

Posted: 12/30/04 at 9:18pmI only saw the tour, back in February. It had Charlie Pollack as Bobby, Christiane Noll as Hope, and of course, the wonderful Tom Hewitt as Officer Lockstock. This show's simplicity worked for Urinetown: the costumes, orchestra, and stage design. I loved it! I sat in Row O at the theater (I could have gotten better seats had I ordered them closer to the show's date, as I almost always get 5th or 6th row for tours), but I was impatient to buy tickets. The music is great, and it had a great storyline in addition to being a fun show. It's sad that there is no more tour or show running on Broadway. It's too bad that it couldn't have run for a little while longer, and I hope there is a revival in 10 or 20 years!

NO ONE HAS MENTIONED STEPHEN PATTERSON YET.
It's enough to make a girl cry, eh.
Harsh laws, too...in Canada.

Mister Cladwell is like Cradle Will Rock's Mister Mister, but I don't think "Mr. Cladwell" references any one song in particular. It's just supposed to be a rousing character introductory number. The staging had a moment or two that looked like "One," but again, I think the humor of "Mr. Cladwell" is the song's show biz razzmatazz, more than referencing any particular show.
As far as BSoBW's question about "What Is Urinetown?" - think "To Life," which the staging of the number echoed a little bit. (The Producers also references "To Life" in the staging of "The King of Broadway").

I love Urinetown. Only managed to see it once, the tour in Toronto, but my copy of the OCR was been played about a hundred times since then. I love how they seamlessly integrate an actual message in while they make fun of said same message. Love it.

"Urinetown" and "Avenue Q" are both prime examples of brilliant off-Broadway shows that become hits on Broadway for the dwindling numbers of chronological adults desperately seeking sophisticated entertainment. Actually, I thought "Urinetown" a bit more clever than "Avenue Q". Both shows are are refreshing changes of pace from "Mamma Mia pays the Wicked Rent in Brooklyn
to the Lion King Producers so they can give us more Beastly Beauty"

Posted: 12/31/04 at 10:25amIt was a very good show! Im just wondering, is Mark Hollmann (the writer) planning anything new???
#45re: Urinetown
Posted: 12/31/04 at 10:27amI actually like this show better than Avenue Q. Both shows are great, but the music is more unique here and it's more clever (celverer?)

Posted: 12/31/04 at 12:35pmMark Hollmann has several projects he is working on, with and without Greg Kotis. They recently both appeared as themselves in Greg Kotis' play, Eat The Taste, about creating a musical for John Ashcroft, that featured an original song by the team. He is working with Greg on an adaptation of the 1951 Alec Guiness movie, The Man in the White Suit, as well as a prequel (of sorts) to Urinetown called Yeast Nation, about the dawn of time. Mark was also attached to compose the music for a musical version of Soapdish, but I haven't heard much about that lately. Supposedly too, Urinetown is being prepped to be a motion picture, to be produced by Killer Films (the company that produced the Hedwig movie).

Gah, I love this show so much. This thread is making me sad
But happy!
Anywho, the long story:
I was waiting outside the stage door, because I do that, & I had seen Luther Creek already. I was waiting for Spencer Kayden & Amy Spanger because Spencer went to college with my high school theatre teacher & Amy's dad used to be a guidance counselor at my school (I didn't know him, but she grew up near me.) Anyway, I thought it would be cool to tell them that, because I'm cool?
Anyway, Daniel Marcus comes out the door & looks at me & stops & says...
Daniel: Wait! Wait a sec... 3rd row, a little left or center?
Me: Whoa, how did you know that?
Daniel: Well, three things. First, you're pretty. Second, you were the first to stand up for the standing ovation, and third, you had that look on your face for the entire show that just said "this is what I want to do."
Me: Wow, good job!
Then we chatted a little bit about college (this was right before my senior year in high school) & theatre & how it's super hard but worth it etc., & then he asked my mom if it was okay if I went inside for a few minutes! I died, basically. I only went backstage up until the stage point, if that makes sense, but he took my onstage & let me stand there in my bliss for a moment or two. Sure, it's just a stage in some cases, but a Brooooadway stage! I was standing on a Broadway stage. It was a moment of...zen or something.
Anyway, that's the long version. I tell it better in person XD
