#0Urinetown trilogy?
Posted: 7/31/05 at 1:38amI could have sworn that I heard that just after Urinetown closed that the writers were going to write parts 1 and 3 of a Urinetown trilogy (with Urinetown being part 2). How far along are they on that, or were those just rumors (I swear it was on Playbill.com)? I ask because I just got the CD yesterday from a friend. Not only was it hillarious, but I haven't been as moved - for lack of a better word - by a cast album on the first listening since the first time I heard Les Miz - and I understood this one a lot better, too! (Or am I just emotionally easy?) Also, a local theatre company will be doing it this winter, and I HAVE to play Bobby Strong!

Posted: 7/31/05 at 2:53amThe idea for the prequel, which will be the first one out of the gate, is going to take a lot of people by surprise.

Posted: 7/31/05 at 3:47amSo, it isn't going to be about the drought and Cladwell's "rise to power?" I've only known much about Urinetown for a couple days, but that at least seems like a likely subject for a prequel.

Posted: 7/31/05 at 11:44amHas a theatrical trilogy ever been done before? It seems like an exciting idea, but maybe not destined for success...

Posted: 7/31/05 at 3:38pmI also loved URINETOWN and can't wait to see where they take this. Did anyone see THE MAN IN THE WHITE SUIT? I heard it was very URINETOWN-ish.

Posted: 7/31/05 at 9:42pmI think there is potential here. I hope Mark and Greg are making enough on regional productions of Urinetown to get by while they write it. I always thought the show closed way too early, with the theatre demolition and all that.

Posted: 7/31/05 at 11:22pmI think it is unlikely to be a huge sucess but at least have a decent following. Many people haven't seen Urinetown. Its not like a movie where you can go pick up a copy of it and revisit it. I think people who go to see the prequal and a sequal will be confused by story since they will not have seen the original show urinetown. Destined for a following but destined to fail never-the-less. As unfortunate as that may be. The only way I can forsee this surviving is if it is written like an individual story where previous background info from urinetown isn't needed. A Story that can stand on its own.

Posted: 7/31/05 at 11:24pmDid anyone ever hear the rumor that ALW wants to make a sequal to the Phantom of the Opera. I hate to see the original ruined but somehow if it was done right it might very well be sucessful.... Now being good thats another issue.

I did hear that one. God I hope that doesn't happen. I barely cared for the characters as it was, let alone to see them again.
Since we brought up possible sequals, does anyone think new editions of Avenue Q could work? Unlike virtually any other show, I could see caring for the characters in different situations. They put them in many other situations as it is. Maybe even an HBO seris? Hey, a guy could dream.

While I disagree with you quite a bit there (though I still love Les Miz and like Phantom), in any case, what does that have to do with why or why not to make sequals?

Again, I love Les Miz and like Phantom, but if that really is reality, then please don't wake me up!

If the other parts of the trilogy are effective, it will be because they are well written. There is nothing inherent in the characters or the universe they inhabit that spells success. If anything, the first show was a hard sell that ultimately worked because it brilliantly parodied its own foundations. The in-jokes about what makes a good show can't be repeated here, though I think that Kotis and Hollman will infuse their unique sense of humor into the scripts in similar ways.
Personally, I'd prefer to see those two focus on an entirely new concept, but I wouldn't rule out the idea that the prequel and sequel will be very different creatures from the original show.
And while I have this window open I would like to take major issue with JohnnyJune's assertion that Phantom and Les Miz are "the best musicals of all time." In terms of story? Score? Staging? Or just timing? Both are really quite fine works of art, but I wouldn't put them in the #1 and #2 spots -- top ten maybe.

Posted: 8/1/05 at 12:26amDon't necessarily assume that the prequel to Urinetown has anything to do with the plot or characters of Urinetown. It shares a theme with Urinetown, but that's it.

Posted: 8/1/05 at 1:40amThey simply must call the prequel THE STINK YEARS.
