From what I understand (and this is heresay, so take it for professional gossip), everything fell apart in the contract negotiations. It wasn't the MONEY that was the issue. Usher has plenty of that. Basically, I heard his "representatives" (aka, his momma) was asking for "more screen time," meaning let's beef up the part, adding scenes and/or songs for Usher.
Hey, this is called "Dreamgirls," not "The C.C. White Story." It's a supporting role with some very nice moments.
The creative team (Condon & company) refused to add or alter material JUST to please Usher's camp. It's not a variety show. It's a scripted musical with a focused, carefully balanced story.
SO... If it's true that they are back to the negotiation table again... let's hope he wants to actually play C.C., instead of trying to turn it into some newfangled leading role.
Also, there was a big legal issue with competing record labels. It's tough to iron out the contract issues, when you have recording stars under contract at different places. Everybody wants a piece of the pie. What a nightmare!
