Ushering A Broadway Show

Posted: 9/2/06 at 4:29pmIt seems like such a waste that so many people working behind the scenes on BWay are people who "know someone"... I think the only requirement to be an usher is to odd in one way or another, because *almost* every one of them I've met has been really strange, and often more dramatic about their work then the actors! Think of it as high school with playbills.

It's that way because the work can be competitive and because the other ushers and managers want to trust that you would be a reliable person. Now, as we all know, just because a person recommends their friend or relative, doesn't mean their friend or relative will indeed be a reliable person. But that's how much in life works. I have only ever recommended people who I know and know to be reliable.
And many ushers are not theatre people. It's a job. They may have become theatre fans because of the job.

This link might be helpful in volunteer ushering for off-broadway and some broadway theaters.
