Well; we just got back from Act 1 of this fiasco. It was truly a very sad pathetic spectacle on display. First let me state the positive. I have been wanting to go to the Kodak theater ever since they opened it about 4 years ago. The Kodak was built specifically for the Oscars. So the theater also functions as a TV studio. Throughout the year they have used it mainly for concerts and the occasional television special. The American Idol finale is also there. It is a neat ; big modern theater. Loved the pictures of oscar winners on display throughout the four lobbys.
On to the show. The music is unmemorable. I couldn't tell you what one song was called. I couldn't even begin to decypher any of the lyrics. It all has this bad Enya feel to it.
The performances were all on the "stand and pose" level. Poor Val Kilmer. Honey ; WHAT HAVE THEY DONE TO YOU???? Well at least he was shirtless for about 20 minutes. His singing is of the Rex Harrison variety with a little mumbling tossed in. I'm telling you; he must have been drunk or high when he agreed to do this. The rest of the cast struggles valiantly. If you want their names or more info pm me. I'm sure they would just rather forget the whole affair; so I wont mention there names here.
The sets were horrendous. It comprises of huge led screens. The kind used in Madonna and Bette Midler concerts. With egyptian style set peices in front. OY!
Also; Val Kilmer has this never ending mumble (song) with the burning bush. It is suppose to be very serious but got the biggest and only laughs of the evening. We didn't stay after intermission. But judging from the line to get out of the parking; neither did alot of people.
What else can I tell you. BAD, BAD ,BAD. If any of you still want to go to this thing out of some kind of curiosity; or as a excuse to see this theater; then at least make sure you get comped. They are papering the house heavily. Free tickets are available anywhere. Just ask any hotel concierge .

Matt, i was thinking of writing that this review peaked my interest of the show. But thought that it'd seem strange. but I really want to see it!!
I want to hear the bad, mumbled showtunes!!! ![]()

Posted: 9/22/04 at 1:54amJust don't pay for it. You will be really pissed. And I wouldn't excatly call any of the music in it a showtune. It is in a show... and sure... it is a tune. But.... NO...

Posted: 9/22/04 at 1:56amHow could you have left? Won't you always wonder what was in store? You would have had bragging rights for decades if this turns out to be as big of a turkey as you make it sound.

Well;
We kind of figured out how they were doing the red sea thing. And by the time intermission roled along it was already 10 pm. Believe me this isn't Carrie. We did the right thing in leaving.

Posted: 9/22/04 at 4:19ami have an aquaintance in the cast (i think he has some feature numbers, his name is Adam), and there is something about Kilmer...our generation's Marlon Brando. Wish i could see it no matter how bad. And i share your fascination with the Kodak....

I read a book review a while ago that I will paraphrase:
"There are good shows, there are bad shows, and then there are fabulous shows, as in 'Oh, you have to see this. Its fabulous!'"
This is due into the Music Hall in February I think, that is if it makes it out of LA, and I for one cannot wait.
