That song . . . is terrible.
I chose, and my world was shaken. So what? The choice may have been mistaken. The choosing was not.

re: VOTE! The Musical

That's really funny in an awkward way. I think I like it..

re: VOTE! The Musical

I think that song is horrendous...I don't know what's worse, the musical writing or the forced lyrics over the nonexistent melody.

ETA: Can anyone seriously watch http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MD6lRXeSn9c&feature=related and say it's...good? I think every song uses some sort of overused predictable progression. :-

re: VOTE! The Musical

It's a musical about high school students needlessly ramping up the stakes...what do you want from the music? It fits the show.

Also, you know what I find funny...everyone talks about how we need new young writers, but so many times on these boards all anyone ever does is tear them down...I just think it's kind of sad.

It's cute, you just have to not take it too seriously.

re: VOTE! The Musical

I think that song's really cute! I don't think it's trying to be sondheim or anything. It looks pretty campy and is about high school, what are we really expecting? And that's an amazing promo if I've ever seen one. Is this what we should be expecting these days from new writers? Full scale music videos instead of demo CDs? I'm all about it.

re: VOTE! The Musical

SO much fun! Clever and fluffy at the same time...Love it!
And I'm sort of obsessed with some of the other tracks on their website. They're totally catchy and they make me smile. I'd be really interested to see the whole show.

re: VOTE! The Musical

Adding "The Musical" to the title of pretty much any clever little comedy show is just getting so old. In Chicago, practically every small theatre company has opened "______! The Musical" and I'm usually turned off instantly from the title alone as the shows' main audiences are usually the cast's friends from their college drama departments.

I could not get through the first 60 seconds of that video. Seriously. I'd prefer a musical staging of the film Election (unless they add "The Musical" to the title).

re: VOTE! The Musical

well... the title of the musical is just VOTE. What someone chose to call this thread, or what additional labels are added (possibly for clarification...in an election year) don't really have anything to do with trying to be cute... and I think it's called VOTE because that's what it is about.

That certainly would be a better title for the show, though I never questioned what the title meant. I just hope the material gets better.

re: VOTE! The Musical

Judging by that blog & that music video this looks like it might have some potential to be a fun new off-broadway show. It kind of gives me a more fluffy, "Spelling Bee" kind of vibe. Also the fact that the current political climate is what it is right now, this show just might get produced.
It's really sad that there are so few commercial off-broadway musicals anymore. I almost wish a show like "in the heights" would have stayed off-bway just to get the theatre going public to recognize that there's stil a lot of amazing work being done south of 42nd St.
Did anyone go to the reading of this? Any reports?

re: VOTE! The Musical

I was there. I loved it. I've pretty much always been a fan of the music, but I got to go with a friend who had invites.
It's campy and funny. Not so much fluffy. It has teeth. There are a lot of cold war references... Celisse Henderson sang a super funny song about it... I hope this goes somewhere.

re: VOTE! The Musical

that was worse than both high school musical "films" combined.

I like some of the stuff on the Myspace page and anything with AKB can't be that bad re: VOTE! The Musical

re: VOTE! The Musical

I love the music. It fits the show. Slightly Spelling Bee-flavored and just a pinch of High School Musical (which isn't THAT bad).

I hope it gets produced someday and I get to see it or be a part of it.

re: VOTE! The Musical

I am a hardcore Vote! fan. I have a demo, not the full one - it hasn't even been recorded in it's entirety, but I listen to the score almost daily and it really cheers me up. It's fun, cute, but not at all fluff. And for anyone who says it's 'horrendous' and even has a go at the title which, as someone (re: VOTE! The Musical pointed out, suits the show and is not a metaphorical piece of bull****. To Mister Matt...accept it. Vote! is a great example of where Musical Theater is, and should, be heading. To Ryann, Steven, and anyone involved with Vote - Good luck.
A little known fact is that in the original screenplay, Pan's Labyrinth was Pan's FLAByrinth. Hmmmmmmm...glad they changed it.
