disappointingly effortful revival
and
a whiff of missed opportunity
Not sure about the rest of the reviews. But this review won't help the transfer some want.

Benedict made some fantastic points on why a Desiree in her mid 30's doesn't work.

All you need to do is read the script to see why a Desiree in her mid-30s doesn't make sense. I love the Bergman movie in some ways more than I love the musical, but the musical isn't the movie. If you want to do the movie, the screenplay has been done onstage as a play and Nunn probably could have gotten the rights to do it.
Links to the reviews of the main quality dailies have been posted on the thread on the West End board.
One negative from the Daily Telegraph whilst the rest are very positive.
I really don't see how it's a good idea to have a 30 year old as Desiree in the musical. It completely misses the point, I think.
I look forward to seeing Natasha Richardson tackle the part in January.
Yeah, even after reading the reviews, I have no desire to see a 34 year old Desiree.
Now Natasha Richardson is perfect for the role.
Mmmmmmm, but then actually having seen her performance it wasn't a problem to me; so much is in the eye of the beholder. As evidenced by the widely differing opinions on this board as to the length of Daniel Radcliffe's penis and even whether or not he's circumcised!
It's exactly the same thing.
...if you've actually seen the performance. If not it's just speculation.
Similarly those vids of the recent West End Guys and Dolls on ebutuoy, that I think we once spoke of, make a stunning sequence look banal. With theatre, being there counts.
