It's Vegas! Get over it people. Go watch a strip show or have sex with a prostitute.
I thought the purpose of the Vegas production was to get people in and out of there in 90 minutes with no intermission.

Dottie - most of the shows choose to do that - but Q opted to present their full production.
What's amazing to me is that people who willingly came to "Sin City" are offended by this show.
This confirms my suspicion that Vegas is rapidly turning into Familytown, not unlike a Disney theme park.
Thanks DG. And I'm sure the ones who are walking out of Q are the first ones in line at the topless reviews!!
My other theory is the homophobe one you've mentioned...
Conservative society (and I use that term cautiously) feel that strippers and prostitutes are naughty but fine... as long as they're straight.
Such a double standard for "sin." I guess there's acceptable sin, and unacceptable sin?

Best12 - I REALLY feel that is the real reason. Yes, there is sinful behavior, but it doesn't fall outside the parameters of what they find 'natural' within their perspective.
And the whole racism thing is just simply something you're not supposed to talk about.
So even though they're openly judgemental about homosexuality, they're over-PC about race. It's almost like that episode of Seinfeld where George is trying to make black friends to convince the guy at work that he's not racist. They're so busy trying to convince themselves that they're not racist that they're in complete denial.

I have to be honest, I didn't see much of Avenue Q advertising further down the Strip from the Wynn. Just on a few taxis. Although on their huge sign outside of the Wynn - the actual word for the sign is failing me... billboard? No... - they had the Avenue Q ads going, one which had the "Warning: Full Puppet Nudity".
Yeah but nudity isn't dealing with homosexuality and racism. Nudity isn't new to Vegas, period (grin).
Since I don't live in NY anymore, I pay more attention to the "little things" when I come up to visit. I noticed that the billboards and bus ads for Avenue Q in NY now focused more on the "Did you hear that we won the Tony" campaign too. Last time we visited, they were more the "closeted Homowhatever" flavor.

Listen, people in Vegas have short attention spans. They traditionally have come to the city to
1. Gamble
2. Eat
3. Watch huge extravagent (mindless) spectacles.
It's not been long a "theatre" town -- and people for the most part aren't yet going there for the main reason to see Broadway shows.
And lets face it, putting the average Vegas tourist in a seat at AVENUE Q is like staging A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC in the middle of a Target: middle America just ain't that into it.
I bet you'll see people walking out of HAIRSPRAY and SPAMALOT too -- not so much that they're offended, but that "dollar buffalo wings" are starting in the casino.

That made me laugh. Vegas sounds dreadful.
I saw it opening weekend. Alas, I didn't see John T., but was still impressed w/the cast.
I didn't see people walk out, but I was surprised that the house wasn't completely full.
All the buzz I heard as I made my way out of the Wynn was very positive. In fact the people behind me were "tourists" and I heard them mention that they knew nothing about the show and wasn't sure if they would like it. Well, they laughed harder than anyone around me. They were typical tourists who spoke of spending endless amounts of time parked in front of a slot machine and only took the break to see this because the title sounded interesting. HEHEHEHE.
I think word of mouth will help the show out here. I hope it does. Gr8 show, gr8 cast and deserves to have a long run.
If you're out this way, check it out. Awesome theater.
Im not "out this way" im going out of my way to see it!
Ayep....me too. 2 weeks from today! Woo hoo!

certainly doesn't surprise me.....who goes to Vegas? Low income to middle class republicans hoping to make a fortune.......naturally they would find Q too much for them.
I thought it was a strange show to bring to Vegas in the first place.....
Britain will lap it up, I think. This is the country that staged and televised Jerry Springer The Opera (to much success, if a little controversy).
Rule Britannia.
Michael Bennett -- your assessment of Vegas is dead on (and very funny). I've been there twice now... and that was one time too many for me.
It's a town that I just don't "get."
...But I'd pay hard-earned money to see a NIGHT MUSIC production in Target.
I hear Home Depot bought the rights to "Piazza!"
Costco is now giving away samples of fried mushrooms in Ailse 7, along with Act 1 of "Pacific Overtures."
Who would have thunk this would happen in Sin City
Still love to go there for the gambling, shows & it is a a really fun place. I still say the lobby of the Bellagio looks like a whore house however
