Just spoke to a friend who was in Vegas recently and caught 4 (yes, 4, don't ask) performances of Q. She said that at every performance at least one person got up and left during 'If you were Gay' and 'Everyone's a Little Bit Racist.' She also overheard multiple people talking about how offended they were by the show.
I know there's been all kinds of talk here about how this show was going to be received by the Vegas audience, so I suppose this was to be expected, but it still bugs me. Oh well, at least it's still getting great reviews. Hope it continues to do well.

We're seeing it this weekend, and I'll be very curious to see the audience reaction.
Sucks to be small minded.
Sucks to be them.
That sucks.
Somehow though, I think that the British may appreciate Q's humor more (or am I wrong?).

I know when I saw it in the beginning of Sept there was an older couple (late 60's or older)sitting next to me. They left at intermission, I heard them say that woman found it to offensive. I be they had comped tickets. That is the problem with casino audiences, a lot of people are there on comped ticket. Therefore, since it is free they will see anything. I have found casino audience to be some of the rudest that I have ever been in.

I don't think that leaving a show because you're offended is rude at all, especially if they have the courtesy to wait until intermission before they leave.
Leaving during a performance, however, is unacceptable.

They should give everybody in the audience a free slice of pizza at the top of act two.
Pizza Monster.
Pizza, wont change a homophobe.

People complain that Q didn't tour, and I realize that it does suck not to be able to see it (I live in Chicago, so boo-hoo for me too) and I know that it's a really super sensitive issue because people thought they were gonna tour and voted on them partially based on that expectation and were all mad and stuff when they didn't...
But the fact is, that this is NOT a musical that appeals to a large amount of people. I think a tour could do ok in big cities, but if you take it to a smallish suburb, and it's just NOT gonna do well.
I bet, though, that every night SOMEONE walks out in NYC. I mean, there's always like at least one family who doesn't ignore the friggin' warning about no children, and there's probably some individual adults who get offended... so, um, yeah.
Anyway, not much to do w/the thread, but that was what I came up with while eating breakfast this morning.

I was not saying that the couple that left at intermission was being rude. They have every right to leave at intermission.
I have found that the rudest audiences I have be in were at casinos.
How the hell did VEGAS get offended?
Also, what is wrong with those people, as Q isn't hiding the fact that it's offensive. These people should do un poco research before they go see stuff.

Being a regular casino patron, I can tell you that when something is comped people do not care. They will wait in line for a free pen, they definately will take free theater tickets to a show they know nothing about.
If it is free it is for me.
Send your Avenue Q tickets to me.
Time to cash in all those frequent flyer miles.

I just saw it this past weekend in Vegas - and it was fabulous, by the way - and from what I saw I didn't see anyone leave. But then again, I was probably far too excited to see John Tartaglia to notice. I think Avenue Q is in great hands - I just think it needs a little bit of time to gain a great audience.

"How the hell did VEGAS get offended?"
The fact is, most of the Vegas tourists are conservative. I'm assuming that what you're referencing is Vegas' reputation as 'Sin City'. The thing is, most of them view the activities in Vegas as legal escapes for adults - which makes them OK. In general, however, the tourist demographic is pretty solidly 'red state'.
This was brought up as a concern by another poster somewhere, and I really thought they had a point (which also included the fact that this is a very verbal show, whereas what normally flies in Vegas is more visual.) I'll be curious to see how it does.

That sucks that people are so closed minded like that and can't take a joke. The same thing happened when I saw Assassins. But I guess that was because people got really disturbed. *sigh*

Forgot about those touristy folks. Woops.

The audiences at Vegas shows (on the strip, anyway) are almost all tourists. Most people who live in Vegas don't have anything to do with that scene unless they work there - and then they're there to work.
Do you know if Vegas Q still has the same ad campaign as in New York? You'd think a giant "I am NOT a closeted homowhatever!" and "Warning: Full Puppet Nudity" signs would at least hint at controversial material. Maybe they should post a song list in the casinos; the titles are pretty self-explanatory.
Whatever, if someone is so offended by the show that they have to walk out, it's their own fault, no one forced them to go.
I was in Vegas a few weeks before it opened, and all the ad-campaigns were along the lines of "Did we mention we won the Tony?" and "Like real life, only funnier." Of course this appeals to more people, but it kind of defeats the purpose in this case.
"Did we mention we won the Tony?!?!" Are you kidding. Please. Thats EGO. They won, and rightly so, but really do they actually have to put it in an add campaign like that? The Producers does it too and I hate it.
So puppet sex is bad, and stippers are alright? Ummm OK.....
I was thinking the exact same thing mominator
I hate when people bad mouth Q.
I love the show so much.
And, John Tartaglia is one of the sweetest people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting.
I hope Avenue Q RUNS FOREVER!
Even if we know Everything in life is only for now.
