You know, I always thought that at least the kind of people who would go to see Shakespeare would be different. Oh no. Oh dear god, no.

When I saw Romeo and Juliet at the Folger Library this winter, the woman sitting next to me had her cell phone on. I know this because several times during the first act it would ring. She clearly had it on a softer volume, but it was loud enough to be a pain in the neck for everyone sitting up on the balcony. And then, just a few days ago, I saw The Tempest at the Shakespeare Theatre as part of a student outreach thing. The audience was entirely made up of high school students, but what shocked me was that these people clearly did not know how to behave in a theatre. The play began with a lighting strike and immidietly the entire theatre starts to scream. Not just a small scream of shock as would be appropriate but long, drawn out screams. Then when the play began, we learned that there was a pool of real water on the stage. Everyone then proceeded to stand up to get a better view of it. When Miranda and Ferdinand kissed every proceeded to go "ooooohhh!" I'm still in absolute shock. I hope to god these people never go to a theater again.

"This is what I trained to do, and this is what I love about theater. What I love about being an actress is being able to really look into myself and understand another human being. And out my own self, to shape and form and fashion a real human being--and to present that in such a way that people see something of themselves or their own understanding in that human being." --Phylicia Rashad

Timely discussion.

Two days ago attended a local production of The Sunshine Boys. A woman in the audience was actually talking back to the characters. At first I couldn't figure out where this extra dialogue was coming from (was it part of the production???) but soon became clear what this person was doing. Bizarre! And ushers and management did nothing about it.

Perhaps it was not a dream.
