I think she knew she probably wouldn't win anyway. Her reviews were not that great while Donna was getting raves.

Reviews rarely have anything to do with who wins the Tony. I feel that Julie Andrews would have won, simply because she's a theatrical legend and it may have been her one last Broadway hurrah. Although Donna Murphy got raves in THE KING AND I, (sorry to bring up this,) but Kristin Chenoweth got absolute raves in WICKED, while Idina Menzel was ripped apart in a number of the reviews. And look what happened there....

I seem to recall Julie Andrews still being announced as a nominee at the awards. They didn't replace her with anyone else, did they? My recollection was that she was still a nominee and if won, would be presented with the award. Whether she chose to accept or not was another issue.

I'm a big Julie Andrews fan - and wasn't going to miss her in Victor/Victoria. Personally, I enjoyed the show, and I felt fortunate to be within spitting distance (second row) of Dame Andrews. I enjoyed the performanaces of Tony Roberts, Rachel York, and Greg Jbara. Overall, I have wonderful memories of a great time at the Marquis Theatre and realized a dream of seeing Julie on stage.

No, Beav. I just mean whomever would have been next on the list for a nomination.

Was Idina "ripped apart" in Wicked reviews? I don't remember that. I do think reviews play their part in nominations at the least. It's not as if the voters walk in without reading them or having preconceived notions based on buzz and reviews. I've known some Tony voters and I know that it played a major part in their decisions. One of them nearly always made up his mind before he actually saw the show. It's infuriating, but true. In 2000, I asked him why he voted Aida for best score. He said, "It was the only musical this season that had a score."

Also one thing you have to remember, is that this is also the year of RENT. Even if v/v got the best musical nom, it would have lost
