So.. the street singer in Victor/ Victoria.. what kind of a part is it?

Dolly Girl,

Let me reach back in my memory banks. The character is a flower girl who comes in and out of the show a couple of times to set a mood. She sings a very pretty version of PARIS BY NIGHT that underscores the changing romantic atmosphere once King Marchan declares his love for Victor/Victoria. She also has a nice moment on the street with Squash when he buys a single rose from her.

She appeared to be in her early to mid-twenties, but she had a waif-like quality about her, so I think she could be played by a mature teen. She had a really nice voice - I'd say a mezzo soprano, although I'm not good at judging that sort of thing. I also believe the actress who played her on Broadway was the understudy for Norma Cassidy.

I don't remember her having many lines, if at all. I just remember her song and her sad sort of romantic presence. She reminded me of Eliza Doolittle when she was selling flowers outside the theater. Hope this helps.

She was actually the understudy for Victoria - gave her something to do. The understudy for Norma was one of the dancers.

Has that person who played the flower girl/understudy done any other shows?

Ann Runolfssen (sp?) went on to play Victoria on tour (when Andrews had to back out of some dates due to her vocal problems), recorded a CD or two, married and had a baby. I think she's living overseas, but I could be wrong.

Anne Runolfsson was the standby for Andrews. Tara O'Brien was the one who actually played the street singer and understudy for Victoria Grant.

Yea, as I recall, it's a pretty much one scene character, BUT has a really good song (Paris by Night)

CATSNY, you are right. Tara O'Brien DID play the flower girl in the Broadway production. She is listed on the DVD liner notes.

And, Tara O'Brien took over the role of Norma Cassidy when Rachel York left the cast. :)

You know, I apologize for my mistake. Tara played the Street Singer...but did she also understudy Victoria?
