There are lots of posts about is Sutton in or out, but I saw Violet today and was wondering what people think of the actual show.

Yes, Sutton is terrific (as is Annie Golden), but the play.

It's really long. The story has enough material for 90 minutes. At One hour 45 with no intermission, it got tedious. Tesori's music is terrific, but if they cut one verse out of each song, you could shave 15 minutes off that sucker.

Also, it is very confusing unless you come in with prior knowledge. The way the show is constructed, you don't find out about the axe in the face until three quarters of the way through. You need that information at the get go, especially when you choose to not muck up her face. The theatregoers sitting next to me had no idea what the heck was going on.

I do like this show a lot. But Tesori needs to edit, and the show should start with the scene with the young Violet getting hit in the face with the axe. Just move that scene, and then everybody gets what's going on.

The first scene/song, "Water In The Well" is A remembrance of the accident. That's why the father yells "Violet, look out!"

Exactly. I had no prior knowledge going in, and knew within 10 minutes about her facial scar....
