Violet

So, we started rehearsal for this today, and I'm absolutely in love with it. So I thought, ya know, since everyone else has been starting an appreciation thread, I'd start Violet's.

re: Violet

I LOVE Violet. The song "You're Different" gives me chills! So does "Bring me to Light". The entire score is just gorgeous.
[title of show] on Broadway. it's time. believe.

re: Violet

VIOLET is underappreciated and unrecognized.
Seeing it was one of the biggest thrills of my life.
Though it hurts to see so many dismiss VIOLET or show indifference, nice to think of it as "mine".

re: Violet

"on my way" makes me cry everytime. actually, it's the only song i listen to on the cd because i get to it and then just keep it on repeat.

re: Violet

I didn't realize there was a recording available of Violet - I must get it soon - I love what I've heard about it so far.
"I don't really get the ending, all i can go with is when after several months,Judith saw Pat sang, and later she kissed him on the toilet, after that the story back to where Pat went down from the stage after he'd sung, and he went to the italian lady.I just don't get it,what Judith exatcly meant when he kissed Pat that she had seen, and did Pat end up together with The Italian Lady? Please help me,thank u very much!" Quote from someone on IMDB in reference to a movie he/she didn't understand. Such grammar!

re: Violet

I LOVE VIOLET!!!

Or is it Vi-uh-lette, as Michael McElroy would say? lol

Captain_Obvious, I love your icon (huzzah homestarrunner.com!) and your name, lol.

Um, oh boy. If you go to Musical Heaven they have the same synopsis that is up at MTI, which is the only one I've seen anywhere.

It really doesn't do it justice. It leaves some questions as to what happens at moments and why - you really just need to see it because so much of following it is in the emotion and the performances given by the fabulous Lauren Ward, Michael McElroy and Michael Park.

PM me and I can try my best though :)

If I show you the darkness I hold inside, will you bring me to light?

re: Violet

Amen. Violet is (to date) my favorite musical of all time. The score is incredible (and a SHUDDER when I think that we will see so much more work coming from Jeanine Tesori), but if you ever get a chance to read the script, you'll be utterly blown away. I only with my theatre company had the resources to produce it. Some day... some day...

To ask again, what's it about?

re: Violet

For a good synopsis go to MTI

Saw the original and the staged reading both at Playwrights. This is hands down my favorite show. I was fortunate enough to do the old lady/streetwalker track a couple of years ago in a regional production. I'm still haunted by the beauty of it. For another source, read "The Ugliest Pilgrim" the short story by Doris Betts that Violet is based on. Fantastic reading to really get insight into the characters.

re: Violet

I wonder why you love "On My Way" LightmyCandle...could it be becuase of this summer?

I LOVE THIS MUSIC!! It is so beautiful. I orginaly got it just to listen to On My Way but once I branched out and started to listen to some other songs, I can't stop listening to it. The music is different and so original. Comparared to the somewhat cookie cutter musicals we are getting these days this one just stands out!

re: Violet

I bought the Violet cast recording after hearing it on broadway world radio and humming it all day following it. It took me a month of having songs in my head before I finally just ordered it so i could get on with my day. Matter of fact i wish i had the CD at work...

re: Violet

Two questions:
1. edenespinozalover - Where are you doing the show?
2. Is it true that the Cast Recording is out of print for good and you can only get CD-Rs when ordered?
That's a damn shame - I got my entire book of musical theatre cds (over 200) stolen this summer from my friends car while visiting Charlotte. bastards. My cast recording went along with the thiefs. I bet they were so disappointed when they opened the book and discovered a bunch of musicals. It's so sh***y to start an entire collection over again.
But I won't live alone in a house of regret.

re: Violet

We're doing the show at my high school in Kenosha, Wisconsin.

re: Violet

TxTwoStep - I was offered a role in Violet around 2000. I think it was in Montgomery County, so it wasn't in town, but nearly the entire cast were Houston regulars. I'm surprised Masquerade or Stages hasn't picked it up. That is DEFINITELY a Joanne Bonasso role.

re: Violet

I don't know much about violet but my director told me "On My Way" was from it and I think it is an awesome song
When someone blunders, we say that he makes a misstep. Is it then not clear that all the ills of mankind, all the tragic misfortunes that fill our history books, all the political blunders, all the failures of the great leaders have arisen merely from a lack of skill in dancing. - Moliere

re: Violet

EElover, when is your show? Maybe I can force a friend to drive out to Kenosha with me to see it :) I'd love to see a production of this!

re: Violet

The show is April 13-17. I don't have a calender in front of me, but we usually have shows at 7:30, except Sundays which are at 2:00. It'll be in our blackbox theater with only 70-80 seats, so PM me if you want me to reserve you some tickets or directions to the school!
