Hey guys, first of all I'm sorry if this is in the wrong place. It doesn't have to do with high school, college, or auditions so I didn't know if it belonged on the student board.
So my question is: my low mix pretty much sucks, so I have a tendency to thin out my chest voice and take it higher than I'm "supposed to" ( I'm supposed to start mixing around the b above middle c). It doesn't hurt, and I like the sound better but is this one of those things that is going to damage my voice in the long run?

I'd like to know this too. I don't know how to mix properly, I think, so I tend to take the chest voice (lighter) up a bit higher than I think I should.
How the hell do people like Kelly Clarkson sing that high and not kill themselves?

well, people spend their whole lives studying stuff like that. How Kelly Clarkson sings that high on a consistent basis (IF she's not hurting herself), probably has to do with:
1) the shape and condition of her cords
2) natural muscular ability
3) the shape of her resonators (pallete)
4) natural body shape (in terms of where she puts chest placement)
5) how all of the above comes together to create that sound
and maybe 6) training

Kelly has probably recently received training, but she hadn't been trained before American Idol.
She's able to sing that high so frequently because she mixes her entire range, and that doesn't damage the voice.

It IS damaging for her voice. There are some styles of belting that even when you know what you're doing are bad for you.
I'm not big on mixed belts. I think that high notes sound best when sung in the upper register.
