Voyage of the Little Mermaid

Reading more of this thread, I had flashbacks to the swimming/spa scene in Aida, and thought the combination of perspective drop, scrim, lighting, costume and flying was very convincing and cool. I know it was only a few seconds, and an entire show like this would be like Tarzan and lose it's effectiveness after the first few minutes or so, but it could an interesting perspective.
I highly doubt though, that any director would place a scrim between his actors and his/her audience for an entire show. That physical barricade would keep the audience from being completely drawn in. Since when have you cared about fish inside a tank? If you were "in the water with them", you'd be more involved.
