My apologies CarolynW if I offended you. I just feel it shouldn't be called a musical as in book musical, think My Fair Lady, Hello, Dolly!, A Little Night Music,Oliver!,West Side Story or Gypsy then think We Will Rock You. Sadly a bad book written by Ben Elton around some pretty average rock songs has the tendency to make Mamma Mia look like great art.
No problem, sometimes peopel do not realize how what they say sounds. I am also used to being hit like this as Las Vegas gets a bad rep from most people.
Yes, it is not your traditional book musical...but what about rock musicals: JCS and Tommy. Then I understand that "Boy from OZ" went out of the box and did well. "Taboo" also I beleive. Never saw either show, but I would never bash them. In fact I would have liked have seen both shows. The world is changing and there are other shwos like this coming up. But this show is much better than Mamma Mia! The lyrics are changed to reflect the show more than Mamma Mia! Also, you have shows such as CONTACT, MOVIN ON, SWING that are not traditional book musicals either. Anyway, I liked the show it was fun and I look forward to Phantom coming to Las Vegas in 2006. If you have been to Las Vegas you will see the types of shows we have they all are in the same genre fun shows. We are working on a Perfomring arts theatre hopefully one day it will come. We have "Peter Pan" and "Les Mis" coming on tour this year which is nice and also "The Graduate." At least they will be here, but will they survive in their new home is something we shall see.
I just wanted to put in my 2 cents about the show, becuase of the talent that is in the show. Some very gifted young people working here in Las Vegas as there is not a show on Broadway for these gifted people. Jason Wooten, Aspen Miller, Doug Crawford, Rich Hebert. Talented young people who deserve a chance to shine on stage and now they are.
Yours,
Carolyn
No matter how "young" and talented the cast is, the source material is bloody awful, can't do a thing about that.
A bit off topic....Carolyn, what are your thoughts on the Las Vegas production being slimmed down timewise? I read that even though they are adding on to the sets (A lagoon I think?) the show will not run as long as the NY production.
Since you say off topic I assume you are talking about Phantom coming to Las Vegas. I can only say that this is being considered a new production, it will be 90 min. Most shows in Las Vegas are 90 min., otherwise you have to have double casts or only one show a night. "Mamma Mia!" had to cut their 10 shows a night. Their lead singer has been out with vocal problems for weeks. I see nothing wrong with the show being cut. They are planning more special effects. I am sorry but that is all I can tell you. That is what has been mentioned in press releases. If I knew more I could not tell you anyway.
Yours,
Carolyn
The reviews out here for We Will Rock You have been very mediocre. I do know people that saw it last week and were not that impressed (they were happy they did not have to pay for their tickets).
It was such a fun show in London. You have to go in expecting a rock concert.
Well I look forward to checking it out on my own.
I am definitely going to check this show out the next time I'm in Sin City. The casting is great and I heard they hit the nail on the head with the Las Vegas production. Very excited to seeing it first hand.
Also, I've stated several times before that the Las Vegas company of Mamma Mia! is top notch.

No, Carolyn. I live in Australia and have not seen footage there. Why would we do a report on a show from Las Vegas? There is no significance of doing that. I heard that Meat Loaf was there. What did he think of it?
Hello rockfenris2005,
I am not quite sure what you are saying in your comment "No Carolyn." I have not posted to you that I know of. Unless it is in reference to the fact you have not seen the show.
Well, I was told by several Australian's that they saw clips of the show. We are a tourist city our economy depends on tourism. So they would be advertising this show, as well as other LV shows in all countries.
Yes, Meat Loaf was here. I talked with him before the show. But did not see him after the show as he was invited to sing on stage with Brian and Roger at the shows after party. He was good too. The party was one big jam session. Several people joined in. I left early. I have been there since 5:00 p.m. and left at midnight. I can't stand for a long time. This old lady has had one too many accidents and must walk with a cane now. But she can rock & roll with that cane:)
Also, many Australians are coming to see the shwo in Las Vegas. Plus there were people from the UK at the opening. Some have even seen previews.
Anyway, hope that answers your question:)
Yours,
Carolyn

Thank you for that. I was just hoping I could've seen that footage. Maybe it was only shown in a few states? And how much of the book has changed? Has it been for the better or worse?
I really do not know that much about the London version or any other versions as I have only seen the Las Vegas version. I do not know about the previous books. When they had the press conference Ben Elton said the show was corny. I know they took out one song and replaced it with "You're My Best Friend" I can't rember the song title right now. I have the CD. But the dialogue and show is very much something stricitly for Las Vegas. The jokes are about Vegas and they refer to the Paris Hotel in the show. The Paris Hotel went to the producers of WWRY and asked to bring the show to Las Vegas.
If it were to move it to another city it would have to have major changes.
Song list. I understand some are shorter than the London version.

Shill means that this Carolyn person is connected with the show? If so then i guess her posts are not exactly honest? (JUST ASKING)!
I was waiting for being accused of being a shill. Just because someone likes a show or talks about it does not mean they are a shill. I happen to be a Queen fan and have been since they came on the scene in the US. Went to a concert something like 23 years ago.
I wish I worked for the production, I could certainly use the extra money:) It would nice to get paid (I am retired and make no money off anything I do), I have a non-profit website. If you had bothered to look at my site I cover Las Vegas mostly. But we also cover the UK when we can and other countries. I have been doing my website since 1996. I at this time do not work for any production company connected with any show in any country. I am only answering questions someone asked me and giving my feelings about WWRY. I retired years ago and just enjoy covering entertainment. I also cover film festivals and other events in Las Vegas.
The owner of this website knows me, as do other people. I have been on the internet since 1995 and many people may remember me posting as Vegas.
I have four people who also cover things in Las Vegas and the UK for my website. We do it because we love entertainment. Here is the link to my website: http://vegasartscorner.com

Carolyn- I'm a big fan of QUEEN. The Vegas humor sounds fun! You guys really know how to put on a show!! I've seen Mamma Mia! there twice and I was amazed by the quality of the production. They didn't miss a beat. I think they need to let the audience have alcohol at their seats in NYC. HAHA
Hi Phantom 2,
Glad you like our city and Queen. I hope you like what they do with Phantom too:) Mamma Mia! is good. I saw it opening night. Have not been back. Can't afford the prices:) We have some amazing casts in this town. CHICAGO had great casts too when it was here. Well, as for alchol not sure the 10:30 p.m. shows would agree with that. They get a lot of drunks at that hour:) At least that is what my friend who was in CHICAGO told me.

I have known of Carolyn for over a year now from her post on various Starlight Express boards on the net. Even though myself and several other StEx fans have not agreed with her opinions on occasion I can honestly say she is not a shill. Notice I said we did not always agree with her opinion on certain things but she is entitled to have her own views just like we are. No one is going to like the same things all the time.
Cool. I lve vegas and look forward to checking your site out regularly. also; I don't think Iris was accusing you.. Just wondering. And now that you have explained it allmakes sense
Sorry DAME I should have said I knew the word shill would come up. No problem I did not mean to offend anyone.

Saw Kasey Sheik from this show in a production of Smokey Joe's Cafe a while back. She was amazing!!!
does anyone know if the proposed tour for next year (which was postponed from last year) is going Equity or not? somehow, i just don't trust these producers. They come from rock and not from legit, i don't think they get how the tour market for musicals works....but i still want to see the show. Somehow, strangely, i was a big fan of the FLASH GORDON soundtrack. i almost wish they had taken that screenplay and inserted more Queen hits to make a really campy evening!

My Dad, Stepmom and Brother saw this show in London and said it was AMAZING and now I can't wait until it gets here. I am so excited!
To TxTwoStep:
The producers know about unions and I think you can trust them. After all they have several productions in various countries besides the UK and the US.
The memebers of Queen are I would think in musicians union and Brian May was married to an actress. Robert de Nero is in SAG which is the actors union. So I am sure that the tour will be either equity or they will make a deal with equity.
Also, Tribeca is having a theatre festival in NYC. So they are very much involved in stage work.
Yours,
Carolyn
